Are air fryer poached eggs a healthier option compared to traditional poaching methods?

Air fryer poached eggs can be considered a healthier option compared to traditional poaching methods in some ways. Here’s why:

  1. Reduced Risk of Overcooking: Air fryers typically provide precise temperature control, allowing you to cook the eggs for a specific duration without the risk of overcooking. Overcooking can result in the formation of harmful compounds, but with proper timing, air frying can help minimize this risk.
  2. Retention of Nutrients: Air frying is known for its ability to retain the nutrients in foods due to the shorter cooking time and minimal exposure to heat. Poached eggs cooked in an air fryer may retain more of their nutritional content compared to other cooking methods that involve higher temperatures or longer cooking times.

While air frying itself can be a healthier cooking method, the health impact of the eggs may also depend on factors like the quality of the eggs, the type and amount of seasoning or toppings added, and the overall balance of the meal. To make this a healthier recipe, serve the eggs on a whole wheat english muffin.

Ingredients for Eggs Benedict

To make this quick Eggs Benedict (or Eggs Benny as it’s also known) breakfast meal, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • Fresh eggs – use the freshest eggs possible, it will really make a difference.
  • English muffins – what would eggs Benedict be without them?
  • Peameal bacon – peameal bacon, regular bacon, leftover ham or even deli ham will work great here too.
  • Fresh parsley – I love the color and light flavour fresh parsley adds. If we are going to go through the work of making eggs Benedict they may as well look pretty too right?
  • Hollandaise sauce – this tried and true version is a dream come true and it’s easy to make (see below for ingredients needed), use a Hollandaise sauce from Amazon – your choice!

What is Peameal Bacon?

Peameal bacon is a type of unsmoked back bacon. It is made from centre-cut pork loin, trimmed of fat, wet-cured in a salt-and-sugar brine and rolled in cornmeal. It can be sliced and cooked on a grill, griddled or fried; or roasted then sliced and served. The brining process makes it nearly impossible to overcook.

Do I have to Use Peameal Bacon for this Recipe?

No – you can use a piece of sliced ham instead. If you use a slice of cooked ham then you do not need to cook it again in the Air Fryer.

Ingredients Needed for Eggs Benedict Sauce – Hollandaise Sauce

  • Egg yolks – only yolks are needed here to make a rich custard like sauce.
  • Heavy cream – most hollandaise recipes don’t use cream but trust me it makes the creamiest most luxurious hollandaise!
  • Lemon juice – this adds that classic bright flavor to the sauce. Only use fresh lemon juice.
  • Dijon mustard – this gives the sauce a hint of tang and adds a bit of depth. It can be omitted if preferred.
  • Cayenne pepper – if you like a little spicy kick add this if not feel free to leave it out.
  • Unsalted butter – a main highlight of this buttery sauce! Salted butter will work too. You just won’t need to add much additional salt if any.
  • Salt and Pepper

Crucial Tips for Making and Storing Air Fryer Poached Eggs

Read on for cooking and storage tips and how to avoid making it a disaster.

Tips on Air Fryer Cooking Times

A few things can affect the cooking time. Your air fryer model, the size of the eggs (small versus extra large eggs) and the temperature of the eggs (starting with cold eggs vs room temperature eggs).

For any air fryer cooking the best way is to monitor the cooking process and adjust for how your air fryer model cooks. Check the food early (at 5 minutes cook time for this recipe) and allow more time if needed.

Can I cook multiple poached eggs at once in the air fryer?

Yes, you can cook multiple poached eggs at once in the air fryer, but it may require some adjustments and the use of appropriate accessories. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Silicone Egg Poaching Cups: If you have silicone egg poaching cups or silicone molds designed for poaching eggs, you can place them in the air fryer basket or on the air fryer tray. Crack an egg into each cup or mold, making sure not to overcrowd them. Follow the cooking instructions for air fryer poached eggs, adjusting the time as needed. Keep in mind that cooking times may vary depending on the size of the eggs and the air fryer model.
  2. Ramekins or Small Oven-Safe Dishes: Alternatively, you can use small oven-safe dishes like ramekins. Grease the ramekins lightly and crack an egg into each one. Place the ramekins in the air fryer basket or on the air fryer tray, making sure they are spaced apart. Adjust the cooking time as needed.

When cooking multiple poached eggs at once, it’s important to maintain proper spacing between the eggs to ensure even cooking and prevent them from sticking together. The cooking time may also vary, so it’s recommended to monitor the eggs closely and adjust as necessary to achieve the desired doneness.

Remember to consider the size and capacity of your air fryer when determining how many eggs you can cook simultaneously. It’s also a good practice to preheat the air fryer before adding the eggs to ensure consistent cooking.

By using the appropriate accessories and adjusting the cooking time, you can successfully cook multiple poached eggs in an air fryer.

Can I use a silicone egg cup instead of ramekins?

We don’t recommend them. Though they work in an air fryer in general the cups need to conduct heat which glass or ceramic will do; silicone will not. So the eggs will not cook the same with this method using silicone egg cups.

How to store poached eggs

Poached eggs are best eaten as soon as they are prepared.

  1. Hi, I love poached eggs, my air fryer is in my oven. I have a small one but I use my oven air fryer more. Iโ€™ve cooked these eggs for almost 12 minutes, they donโ€™t look pretty but boy are they good!

  2. My wife does not appreciate soft yokes in her eggs, whereas I do! At 5 minutes, will 4 eggs be soft? And will I have to cook them longer to satisfy my wife?

  3. Where does the butter go? You mention it in the write up but not the directions or ingredients?

    1. Janice - Salads for Lunch says:

Sorry about that, I missed a step in the directions for the hollandaise sauce, and thus left it out of the ingredients list too. I’ve updated the recipe.

  4. I love this idea!!! If I am only cooking 1 egg in the air fryer is the time and temp the same?

  5. We're Forking Hungry says:

Delicious! I love a good eggs benedict, but I’ve never tried poaching the eggs in our air fryer (granted, we’ve only had it 6 months, but still). They turned out great and I really enjoyed it. Great recipe, thanks!!
