Why you’ll love this recipe for air fryer home fries
Making home fries can go terribly wrong pretty quickly: You can over-cook or under-cook the potatoes. You can burn them and still have the centers raw. I think this is why we have these at diners more often than at home, despite them being called “home fries”. The good news is that making them in the Air Fryer solves that problem – they’re perfect every time! Cut up the potatoes, season them, and pop them in the Air Fryer for a perfect breakfast potato!
What kind of potatoes are best for home fries?
In my opinion Yukon Gold potatoes are the perfect potato for home fries – they’re, versatile, delicious, and have just the right amount of starch to make just about any potato dish. You will notice that I use Yukon Gold potatoes in many other of my recipes, like my top-rated Shepherd’s Pie recipe. Because of their soft flesh, you don’t need to peel them (which is a big time saver) and they fry up perfectly in the air fryer!

Frequently Asked Questions about making home fries in an Air Fryer:
How long do you air fry home fries?
To make home fries in the air fryer you “Fry” potatoes for 10 min at 390. Take out tray and shake often while cooking to prevent potatoes from burning and sticking together.
Why do you keep the the skin on home fries?
There’s a two reason why I don’t peel the skin from my potatoes to make home fries:
1) I’m lazy – peeling takes soooooooo much effort!
2) The skin is where all the nutrients are in a potato.
Hash browns vs Home fries: What’s the difference?
Hash browns, or hashed brown potatoes, are shredded potatoes seasoned with salt and pepper, then sautéed until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside and still soft on the inside. Hash browns cook in a single layer on a large skillet or in the oven on a sheet pan.
Home fries are made from cubed or diced potatoes.
Why are my home fries mushy?
Improperly cooked home fries can be limp, greasy, or soggy and often over-browned. This problem arises when the surface starch absorbs nearby moisture and seals the surface. If you don’t dry the potatoes, you won’t get a dry surface that seals. Thankfully this problem can be alleviated by making home fries in an Air Fryer. Air fryers rely on the circulation of hot air instead of oil to produce crispy food. While they do use some oil (only a tablespoon or two), it’s not enough to be absorbed into the potato.
