TIPS AND FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Read on for tips and substitution ideas on how to make this recipe, such as how to customize this salad, and how to store this salad.

Can I use a different type of apple?

While Granny Smith apples add a unique tartness to this coleslaw, you can experiment with other apple varieties if you prefer a sweeter or different flavor profile.

Is there a way to reduce the sugar in the dressing?

Yes, you can adjust the sugar to your liking. Start with less sugar, taste, and add more if needed.

Can I make this Granny Smith coleslaw in advance?

Absolutely! In fact, making it in advance allows the flavors to meld even more. It’s perfect for meal prep.

How do you store Apple Coleslaw?

Storing your Apple Coleslaw properly is essential to maintain its freshness and flavors. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Refrigeration: Coleslaw should always be stored in the refrigerator to keep it at a safe temperature and prevent bacterial growth. Make sure to use an airtight container with a lid or cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap.
  2. Separate Dressing: If you have leftover dressing or are storing the coleslaw for an extended period, consider keeping the dressing separate. This prevents the cabbage and other ingredients from becoming soggy as they soak up the dressing over time.
  3. Shelf Life: Freshly made coleslaw can be stored in the refrigerator for about 3 to 5 days. Beyond that, it might start to lose its crunch and flavor.
  4. Chilling: Allow the coleslaw to chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving. This resting time allows the flavors to meld, making it even more delicious.
  5. Avoid Freezing: Coleslaw is not suitable for freezing. The cabbage and other veggies will lose their texture and become mushy when thawed.
  6. Mix Before Serving: When you’re ready to serve the stored coleslaw, give it a good toss to ensure the dressing is evenly distributed, and the ingredients are well-mixed.
  7. Keep it Cold: If you’re transporting coleslaw for a picnic or potluck, use a cooler or keep it in the shade to prevent it from sitting out at room temperature for too long.

By following these guidelines, you can enjoy your Granny Smith Apple Coleslaw for a few days after making it while keeping it fresh and appetizing.

  1. Hi Janice,

I made your recipe just as written and it is in the fridge chilling right now. I like the reviews stating to add almonds, as well as your ideas for blue cheese, or pineapple. Sounds good and nice for summer that way, which I will definitely be making. I tasted the salad before chilling and can not wait to have it for dinner when the flavors are married together. That dressing is delicious and I didn’t use it all so I jarred it up and will have it on hand for whatever. So yummy!! How long will the dressing last in the fridge before I have to use it up, if you don’t mind me asking?

Thank you again for sharing this amazing salad! I know everyone will be loving it!
