How was your week last week? Did your drink your water? Get your beauty sleep? And eat your 7-8 servings of fruits and veggies? (Remember: fruit and veggies are chock full of fiber!).

This week was tough, as it was my first week solo parenting since Amber was born.  (Can you believe she’s a month old aready?!).  As you’re aware, I suffered from post-partum depression during my last two maternity leaves.  My second leave was worse than my first, as my hubby spent that year in Ireland while I raised a newborn and a two year old by myself without help (I have no family nearby).  I really stopped reaching out to people and felt really lonely.  I particularly remember one two week stint in which the only phone call I received was from the library hounding me to return a book.  I realized then that even if I committed suicide no one would know, ’cause no one was checking in on us, and my girls would probably die too – yes that’s the only thing that kept me from doing it.  Scary, sad and true.  Afterwards I got help and discovered that I felt best when I exercised and ate healthy foods, and reached out to people to do things with us.

Armed with the knowledge of what makes me feel good,  I decided to embark on the 30 Day Shred, along with Greta (MiddleAgedJock) and TEN other Twitter friends.  I sent out a few tweets, wrote up a blog post and was AMAZED at how many people wanted to SHRED with me!  (You can still Shred too – I still have 23 days left & will support you along the way).

I did 6 of the seven Shred days this week and felt great!  I’m modifying it to be lower impact ’cause the muscles of my perineum are still healing from my second degree + tear (TMI – sorry!).  I’m ok with doing lower impact because my goal at this point is not weightloss or even strength – it’s just to feel good.  I’m an endorphin junkie!

My week with the kids went well – most nights I had EVERYONE (including the baby) asleep by 11 so I was able to get my sleep. We also went to the library with one of my friends and her kids, and we went to the movies on Friday to see Tangled (AWFUL MOVIE BTW).  I didn’t feel much like cooking, so we ate at Subway THREE times!  I realized during the week that my small town has MORE Subway stores than McDonald’s so that’s pretty cool!  Now I just wished Subway would put in play places like McDonald’s so the kids can also play off some energy afterwards while mommy nurses the baby….

All in all my recovery is going well, my Christmas shopping is almost done, and I feel “ALIVE” not grey and foggy like in the past.  In fact I’ve even been able to tackle some small de-cluttering projects at home which has resulted into a few trips to the local Salvation Army.  Man it feels good to be helping others in need!

    I can’t imagine how hard it is to have two children and your husband out of country!! I am so glad that you got yourself help and healthy! I had post partum anxiety, not really depression but I had anxiety attacks, couldn’t sleep, was overwhelmed. It wasn’t so much from the newborn stuff, it was health problems that my son was having, it was awful. I am so glad I got through that (with the help of some anxiety medicine!). Once you are through it, you can look back and see how not normal things were. I am glad that your post partum period so far has been easier.
    I have really enjoyed shredding with you! As I told you in a tweet – you are such an inspiration, working out like you do while caring for three girls, one a NEWBORN. Wow, I am just in awe.

    I KNOW that getting in workouts is a HUGE factor in me not dealing with PPD issues. Once I got back to workouts after M was born, I felt so much better and not quite as off anymore.

    You’re a wonder woman. You do more than I do and I have one child! Ha ha. I went on meds when I had PPD and I’m STILL on them. Have not found a good time to do the weaning process, so it goes.

    I’m glad you’re doing low impact. You gotta take care of yourself, honey. Thanks for being a great inspiration! XO

    Yay for endorphins! Sounds like you had a good week.

    I don’t think it’s TMI to share about post partum issues. Pregnancy & motherhood leaves us with little privacy sometimes. (We were tweeting the other day about how the little ones love to join Mommy in the bathroom … )

    Way to go with the Shred! I read/heard about your adventures to the movie theater. Good for you in getting the kids there. Too bad the movie was bitey. Hopefully the next movie adventure will be better.

    I totally agree with Subway’s needing a play area for the kids. I could sit in there and smell the fresh bread all. day. long. Oh…and the kids would enjoy it too 🙂

    It is so hard to be alone with young kids, especially for a whole year. Wow. I hope that your goals help keep your spirits high. I hope that if you start to have a blue day that you will let us all help you with words of encouragement. I’ve never been to Canada, but I am always up for a road trip :).

    I don’t know how you did it! Wow. I freak out because my farmer hubby leaves me for long hours alone with the kids. Some days I just need a breather.

    I think I missed all the info on the Shred. Could you point me to the necessary stuff? Sounds like fun and I need the social aspect right now. You rock for starting it. Thanks! I wish you the best and don’t think it was a TMI… Mommies all understand. 🙂

    You are amazing, so glad you are doing well. Keep exercising! I also go through a depresion type thing when I am pregnant. Exercise has really helped me to get over it though. It’s amazing how those darn hormones work on us sometimes!

    I just adore you!! Really I do!

    I remember feeling the EXACT same way as you did (when you were raising #1and #2)… I think it is fantastic that you recognize that when you take care of YOU… you can best take care of others. *hugs* (I am still working on that fact for me). Too often I put myself on the back burner… and then am NO fun to be around. 🙁

    I have heard that Tangled is not the greatest movie. IT is a bummer that cute trailers (for kids) turn out to be not so cute. 🙁 I am still bummed about Where the WIld Things Are (still haven’t seen it due to bad reviews).

    I would love to shred with you girls (if you will have me a week late in teh game).

    You are amazing… I really do admire and look up to you and all that you have (and are) accomplishing.

    I haven’t even STARTED my Christmas shopping yet! We don’t have kids yet though, so it’s not quite as scary as it could be.

    Re: Heather’s Yum Yum Brownie Muffins, I don’t know how they would work as a cake, the texture is much more dense than a regular cake, so it might get funky.

    And yes, Phoebe is a rottie. She’s just under 3 years old, and a petite 65 pounds, which is good since she hogs a lot of the bed already. 😉 We love her, and she’s such a sweet dog, loves to snuggle, and loves everyone she meets.

    You rock! Thanks for sharing the dark thoughts that come with post-partum depression. I currently “have” it. I was diagnosed a month post-partum with my 1st little boy. I was put on medication. And have done well on it. My doc is hesitant to “ween” me because of the dark winters in Michigan. But it’s true, diet and exercise does make you feel better. I definitely feel better after I work out. EVEN better than just being on the medication.

    You are doing Shred at only 4 weeks PP? Wow, you are amazing! That is so cool that others are doing it with you too. I am really excited for the group of us who will be doing P90X next month. Otherwise, I am really loving helping others in my community get fit as I’ve launched my personal training business.

      Thanks 🙂 Trust me when I say I’m modifying it… A LOT! My 5 yo likes to “spot” me when I do pushups, it’s the cutest thing ever!
