Today I Wear Teal for Ovarian Cancer

This is a picture of my Oma and I:

(I’m guessing I’m about 2 yrs old – perhaps this picture was taken while my Oma was babysitting me when my mom gave birth to my brother?)

Here’s another picture of my Oma:

Today I wore a teal tank top in honor of her.  Oma, my mother’s mom, lost her battle with Ovarian Cancer in January 1983.  A mommy to SEVEN children, she had a heart of gold and LOVED kids – myself included.  Unfortunately I was very young when she first got sick (7 yrs), so I didn’t have very much time to get to know her well.

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month, and in a week from now my mom and I will be participating in the 5k Walk of Hope together in  memory of my Oma.

Did you know that Ovarian Cancer is one of the hardest cancers to detect in the early stages?  Only 19% of ovarian cancer cases are detected before the cancer spreads outside of the ovaries.  For that reason, I’d like to share with you a list of symptoms to be aware of.

Ovarian Cancer Symptoms:

  • Bloating
  • Pelvic or abdominal pain
  • Trouble eating or feeling full quickly
  • Urinary urgency or frequency
  • Upset stomach
  • Back pain
  • Pain during sex
  • Constipation
  • Menstrual changes
  • Unexplained changes in bowel habits
  • Unexplained weight gain or weight loss
  • Ongoing unusual fatigue
When ovarian cancer is diagnosed early the survival rates can be as high as 90%, so please pay attention to your body, and if you experience any of these symptoms visit your doctor.
