My Year of Running 2016: Shut Up and Run – The Year I Ran for Fun

Shut up and run - a recap of my year in running

This is my third year participating in the Year in Running link up first hosted by Miss Zippy (Amanda), and now hosted by Courtney of Eat Pray Run DC. (Here’s my post from 2014 and my post from 2015). I love the opportunity to look back on my year, to reflect on what went well, and what didn’t. Usually when I do this I find out that I was far more successful than I give myself credit for as I can be rather hard on myself, or it can help me to make plans for the next year.

Best race experience?
After a very successful 2014 and 2015 this year was like a cut-back year for me. I’m pretty sure I only ran in two races this year, they were two separate Mountain Equipment Co-op 10k’s. The first one I ran with Juliette in May, and the second one I ran with Becky in June. We had a lot of fun at those races and I need to make a bigger effort to fit some races in this coming year around the girls softball and hockey schedules. It will be hard though as my two oldest daughters both play travel softball.

Best run?
Hands down it was the long run I did with Juliette and Becky on Labour Day weekend. We ran along the country roads north of town – an area that I love to run in. Running in the country is very calming for some reason.

Best new piece of gear?
My Polar M600 – this is a FANTASTIC running device! Heart rate training with it is amazing and I can’t say enough good things about it. Thanks Polar!

Best running advice you’ve received this year:
Don’t give up. This has been a frustrating year with my running – I’ve gotten a lot slower, gained weight and have had a hard time motivating myself. In November I logged in the most km’s of the year and some of my “speed” returned and realized that if I don’t give up running can once again be as effortless as it used to be.

Most inspirational runner?
My best running friends Juliette and Becky. They have inspired me to get up and run on many mornings when I would have rather stayed in bed. I love those two awesome runners!

Favorite picture from a run or race this year:
This selfie of my oldest daughter and I after a morning run.  She had signed up for her cross-country team and wanted to get up and run with mommy to train for her cross-country race:

And this selfie captures the joy that running gives me perfectly – I need to print it out and put it on my desk to remind me of how much fun I have when running so that I’ll get out on my lunch breaks and do it more.

If you could sum up your year in a couple of words, what would they be?
Hard and frustrating. Not being consistent with my running has made every run hard and frustrating. Late October and for all of November I was consistent with my running and by the end of November running felt effortless. I need to keep this in mind for 2017…

Bonus Question – What’s on your running plan for 2017?
This isn’t really running but I’ve already registered for the Iron Girl Canada sprint triathlon so there will be some swimming biking and running happening in 2017. I also hope to run more of the Mountain Equipment Co-op races because they’re only $15.
