Motivation Monday: Let the Training Begin!

Wow! This past week sure was BUSY!! Halloween, returning to work, Amber’s first birthday…. Crazy! Thankfully I was able to manage the stress with some lunch time workouts, which really helped me to manage the emo-eating:

Monday: Spinning class at the gym with my co-woker
Tuesday: 5k easy run at a 6:32/km pace
Wednesday: Amber’s birthday & a vacation day from work – Did the Mamavation 2 week challenge Ab workout
Thursday: 8k Tempo run (easy 1.5k warm up, 5k @ 5;33/km, easy 1.5k cool down)
Friday: 5k easy run at a 6:32/km pace
Saturday: Rest ” my in-laws are visiting for Amber’s first birthday
Sunday: 11k long run at a 6:32/km pace with two girlfriends

Every 7 minutes in Canada, someone dies from heart disease or stroke.  In fact, in 2008 cardiovascular disease accounted for:

  • 29% of all deaths in Canada (69,648 deaths ” or more than 69,500)
  • 28% of all male deaths
  • 29.7% of all female deaths

Aren’t those some scary stats?
This past week I received an email letting me know about the  VIP Program  for the  2012 Becel Ride for Heart, so I forwarded it to my husband and asked, “Is this something you’d consider doing with me?”.  He quickly emailed me back: “YES!”.

Becel Ride For Heart

As I’ve written in my post, “Do You Have Time for a Heart Attack?“, my husband’s uncle who is only a few years older than him, suffered a massive heart attack last fall.  Thankfully Uncle Dave recognized the symptoms early, sought early medical attention and was able to have emergency by-pass surgery.  Uncle Dave is VERY lucky to be alive today.  His experience has taught the family that we must be more active and eat healthier foods.  Since then we’ve been trying to find something motivational and active that we can do together as a couple.  Hubby is not fond of running and prefers to cycle.  In fact he recently got a new-to-him bike from a co-worker and has been struggling to find the motivation to ride it since.  Today I committed to the VIP program which means raising $1000 for Heart Disease, in return for:

  • The choice of  which of the four priorities of Heart and Stroke Foundation’s mission my fundraising will support: Awareness & Prevention, Healthy Communities, Healthy Children & Youth or World Class Research (I choose the Healthy Community)
  • VIP Cycling Jersey
  • Event-day hospitality package including catered breakfast and lunch, free car and valet bike parking and special refreshment stops
  • Access to any of the three Ride routes and choice of start time
  • Invitation to the VIP Rally and post-event thank you Ride

I’m going to ride  75k  on Sunday June 3, 2012 with my husband!

Our cycling training starts this week!
Besides the spinning class I attended last week, I haven’t rode a bike in years, and neither has my husband.  Eeeeek!  This means we have to start our training and I have to incorporate my cycling training with my Chilly Half Marathon training….

Monday:  Spinning class with my co-worker
Tuesday:  5k easy run at a 6:32/km pace
Wednesday: BodyPump
Thursday: Speed track workout 2k warmup & cooldown, 2 x 1600m in 8 min, 800m recovery jog
Friday:  5k easy run at a 6:32/km pace
Saturday: BodyPump class
Sunday:  11k long run at a 6:32/km pace with two girlfriends

I’m not sure what my husband’s training will be, but I will definitely get on him to do something, after all he’s now committed to a goal and I won’t let him slack off on it!

(NOTE: You can register for the Becel Ride for Heart VIP Program too!  If you register before November 30, 2011 your $40 registration fee will be waived)

So exciting!! Love it that you found something that he wants to do with you. My hubs decided to run my next 5k with me and he started training yesterday using a modified C25k program. I’m so jazzed!!

I ran across your blog only a few days ago, but reading your posts has truly demonstrated to me that you find your workout motivation in the fact that you don’t want to be sick when you “grow up”. This is the ultimate motivation; and I’ve reached that stage as well, for a few years now. I hope people reading your articles could find inspiration in how passionate you are about keeping healthy, and sickness-free! Also, I love the way your motivation is contagious. Your husband is a testimony to that. I’m sure he had the option to say no, when you asked him to join you. He said yes because he believed that was the healthy thing to do. I have been motivating my girlfriend to workout as well and this morning, after I came back from my 6:00 am workout, she woke up and was off to the gym! YESSS 😉

Very cool! Okay, I am a sucker for cycling anyway… but this is a great cause for you to ride for. Have fun and post updates on your training. I will be watching your progress.

Have a great week and I feel your hectic week! We had 2 birthdays, a party and Halloween… add the silly time change and I am way off my game! 🙂

You certainly had a lot going on last week. The 75k with your husband, can’t wait to see your training progress. It has been at least a decade since I’ve been on a real bike.
