Three more weeks until post-babies half marathon #2.
I can’t believe how time flies – It really seems like just yesterday I was feeling bummed out and down.
January 1st 2011 – a new year and I was up early supervising the kiddos while I let my hubby sleep in. I haven’t told you guys this because I was ashamed, but I was wearing the new jammies that I had bought myself for Christmas (at our place everyone gets new jammies Christmas Eve). I was wearing my BRAND NEW jammies… jammies that didn’t fit… they were FAR too tight across the thighs, hips, abdominal area and bust (hubby didn’t mind the bust part). Too tight even though they were the SAME size jammies as the jammies I had bought for myself the year before at Christmas. My weight was the same, but I was bigger. Bigger all overr. And I was not happy about it.
I decided that I needed to do something about this situation, this predicament that I found myself in. I realized I had two choices, I could either:
A) buy new jammies that FIT, or
B) lose the weight.
I chose to lose the weight.
By running. Running is my soul sport. The one activity that I do that makes me feel the most ALIVE and happy. And you know what makes me even happier than running?
Racing and TRAINING!!
As I told you before in my New Year’s Resolution post, I pulled out my credit card that morning and went crazy. I went crazy registering for races. An 8k in April, a 10K in May, a HALF MARATHON at the end of May, and another HALF MARATHON in October. I set some goals and I wanted to stick to them. Putting my money out helps me to stick to my goals because man-oh-man I am cheap. I HATE spending money even more than I hate jammies that don’t quite fit.
My second half marathon of the year is in three short weeks.
So Saturday morning I headed out for my training run – 14k – the LONGEST training run I’ve done in years. In fact, I think it’s the longest training run I’ve done since November 2004 when I was 7 weeks pregnant with SIerra and ran 16k.
14 freaking kilometers.
But I did it! Without aid stations and without any energy gels (because I totally forgot that a little bit of extra carbohydrates in a readily available gel helps provide the energy that your working muscles need on a long run).
I DID IT!!!! I feel so ACCOMPLISHED!
The day was absolutely gorgeous – the sun was shining, the leaves are just starting to change colours, and there were only a few other runners out. It was early-ish (9:30) and my legs felt strong, powerful and RESTED. I felt like I could have run forever!
This was my longest training run in years! Such an amazing feeling. I’d hash out the details of my run for you – my splits, what I saw, smelt an felt along the way, but I’m really not that kind of runner. I don’t remember those things – my mind goes elsewhere. I reflect on life when I run. Old memories come flooding back to me – good memories, happy memories. And that’s why I run – I LOVE where my brain goes, and that feeling stays with me for a good day or so – the longer the run, the longer the feeling stays.
I ran 24 km over this past week, and next week my plan is to run close to 40 km. My last big training week before I begin to taper. I can’t wait!!

PS – The weight is gone. I’ve lost it all and then some. I look better and FEEL better physically and MENTALLY than I have in YEARS!
