How to Keep Your Earbuds from Tangling + Other Things I’m Loving

It’s been quite a while since the last time I wrote a “Things I’m Loving” post but I’ve found so many great things that I want to share with you. I honestly struggle with figuring out the best way to share these things – Instagram pics? Twitter? Facebook? Dedicated blog posts for each item?

I definitely don’t have enough time to write dedicated posts about every awesome fitness related thing I encounter so I’ve decided to resume writing a “Things I’m Loving” post on a monthly basis, probably on the last Saturday of the month because the first Saturday of the month is the Ultimate Coffee Date (another meme/link up that I’d love to get back into participating in).

cordskinz review - no more tangled earbuds!

The first thing I’m loving are these Cordskinz for my earbuds. I cannot live without music. I blast it in the car on my way to work, on the deck by the pool, at work, and when I run or workout. I also love making new music playlists like my Ultimate Summer Workout Playlist or my Awesome Marathon Training Playlist. But I hate hate hate untangling my earphones to listen to music. How these things get so tangled in my desk drawer overnight completely baffles me. Are there ninja mice going drawer to drawer at work tangling people’s earbuds? Either way I don’t have to worry about the cord tangling ninja mice anymore with these Cordskinz I was sent to try out because they actually work! At first they looked complicated to use but it turns out they’re actually quite easy. Here’s my video demo of them (this first appeared on Periscope:

Simply put, Periscope is a social networking, live-streaming video app for iOS and Android. Now I’m not a huge fan of seeing myself on camera, and I’m not great with just sharing random thoughts so I thought that I would hate Periscope but I decided to download the app to my phone anyways. Guess what? I LOVE it! The first thing I did was set up my profile. Because it’s owned by twitter, getting started was easy. I signed in with my twitter account and was able to quickly find people I already know from Twitter on Periscope. I enabled phone notifications in the app (which now go directly to my Polar m400 watch thanks to the Polar m400 software update) and I’m notified anytime someone I follow goes LIVE on Periscope. If I’m available I can open the app and watch live, comment etc to interact with the broadcaster. If I’m not available I can always login a little later to see the broadcast. It’s pretty cool because the broadcaster can see your comments, and likes (hearts) as they stream. Because I wasn’t sure what to use Periscope for, I decided that my first live stream would be a review and demonstration of the Cordskinz I shared above. It was really cool to see people joining in to watch. While sharing my review was fun, what I really liked was seeing the people I “know” through social media talk. I’ve watched a few of Katie of Moms Little Running Buddy and Lisa of RunFastMama’s “scopes” (broadcast) and Pretty Little Grub’s pizza recipe. It made me feel more of a connection to them and it was nice knowing that the scope was unscripted and live… no editing! There’s one caveat – the broadcasts are only available for 24 hours so if you want to share the scope on your blog you’ll have to save the video to your camera roll after scoping, then upload it later to either wordpress, or to Youtube. A possible use for it is to share live events – races, crossfit games, workouts, concerts, product reviews etc. I’m not sure how much I will scope and put myself out there but I will definitely watch your scopes. You can follow me on Periscope, I’m @fitcheerldr and I will follow you back!

The third thing I’m loving is the somewhat recent software update to my Polar m400 watch. I wrote a detailed review of the Polar m400 last year, but since then there have been a few software releases to it that have really improved its usefulness for me. The biggest thing is Smart Notifications – the watch can now Bluetooth connect to my phone and will display any notifications (as set in the notification center settings of my phone) to also display on my watch. This way I can leave my phone in my purse instead of having it in my pocket to feel for notifications. I find that if I can see my phone I want to play on my phone – I play the SIMS, scroll facebook, google news, lurk on twitter, read articles through Flipboard etc. It’s such a bad habit of mine, that I’ve been trying to break. This update is helping me to break my phone habit – only notifications that I NEED to see come through, ie: incoming phone calls, text messages and periscopes. (OK – I don’t need to see periscopes the minute they are broadcast but I LIKE to see them).

It’s been a while since I shared what I’ve been watching on Netflix so I thought now would be a good time to share with you the hidden gems I’ve found. For cuddling up with my youngest (Amber, age 4) on a Sunday night after a fun-filled weekend of camping, swimming and softball we’ve found Tinkerbell and the Legend of the Netherbeast. While my older daughters have been enjoying the Monster High movies and Dragons: Race to the Edge.

Last month, after the girls went to bed my hubby and I quickly watched our way through all the episodes of Schitt’s Creek. Created by Eugene Levy and his son Dan Levy, it’s a humorous series starring Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara as Johnny and Moira Rose, a formerly wealthy couple who are forced to live in a rundown Motel with their two adult children (played by Daniel Levy and ) in the town they bought as a joke after they lose all of their money. It also stars Chris Elliot who you may recognise from skits on Letterman, Everybody Loves Raymond etc. There’s one episode where the characters get involved in selling multi-level marketing cosmetics products. Anyone who has ever been to an Alouette or Arbonne party will find this episode hilarious. I particularly like the show because Eugene Levy and his son are Canadian, and the show is filmed in the Durham Region (Uxbridge) and Toronto.

Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Martin Sheen star in Grace and Frankie, a hilarious comedy about a pair of rivals who are left to cope after their business partner husbands fall in love with each other. My hubby and I found this hilarious and we spent all of May watching this Netflix Original series.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that I’ve also binge watched Season 3 of Orange is the New Black. This is totally my guilty pleasure.  The cast & crew are back along with a new inmate, Ruby Rose who reminds me of Miley Cyrus.  I won’t spoil the season for you by telling you what happens, except to say it’s gooooood and you MUST watch it!

I have many more things I’m loving, but I’ll share those with you in August.  In the mean time, I’d love to hear what you’re loving lately…

I need to try out another periscope. I felt my first one didn’t go so great but it was still fun and something I want to play around with a lot more.
I am totally binge watching Orange is the New Black right now. I’m almost done the season though which is sad.

I’ve had nothing but problems with Periscope. I saved my first ‘scope and tried to upload it to YouTube for subsequent viewing. My second one crashed in mid-broadcast (so did the first, but at least it was seen by some people), and showed no evidence that it had ever existed. I’m thinking of doing some scopes while out riding, but I think the wind noise will be prohibitive.

Anyway, I’m liking OITNB Season 3, and I’ve watched a little of Dragons: Race To The Edge with Shark Boy.

    I haven’t updated my M400 in AGES – what a fun update!!
My Fitbit charge will vibrate when I have a phone call, which is nice because I don’t have to worry about stalking my phone while waiting for a call – I know I’ll feel it on my wrist.
