Five New-to-Me Healthy Food Options

Today, with the weather being cooler, and somewhat dreary, is a good day for our blogging topic:

List your 5 new-to-you healthy food options

I tend to go for more comfort food when the weather is cooler – so today’s topic is a great reminder to me that there are many many HEALTHY options available to me if I just look around.

The first food that I’m going to share with you was discovered by my kids and my husband at WalMart!  There was a big display right by the front entrance (you know where they usually keep junk) and the bright colours, and smiling fruit of the Buddy Fruits grabbed my kids attention:

The kids LOVED them and thankfully hubby bought enough for their lunches too. These are not only yummy – but they’re healthy too – check out the back of them:

No preservatives
No colourings
No additives
No fat
No water added
No gluten
Nothing artificial
50 calories

The ingredients are fruit, fruit and more fruit. NOTHING else! I also like that there’s no mess to clean up (unlike the fruit cups we’ve been sending to school in their lunches):

The next item was sent to me to review.  These are Vega Energizing Smoothies.  They’re  a convenient, on-the-go nutrient boost. The Energizing Smoothie gives you the all-natural, plant-based goodness “compete with protein, fiber and Omega-3 “but unlike traditional smoothies, you only need water to shake and go:

OK – so here’s where I make up with Dole over the messy fruit cups… I found these Dole Live Right Bites at WalMart (we do a lot of grocery shopping there just because it’s convenient):

These are available in four fabulous flavours: Dark Chocolate Coconut Bites, Cranberry Almond Bites, Peanut Butter Banana bites and Mixed Berry and Almond Bites, but my favourite is the Peanut Butter Banana ones. Unfortunately my co-worker is allergic to banana, and the kids can’t bring products with nuts in it to school, so we eat a lot of these at home.

I tried them and liked that they provided a lot of nutrients, but found that they got stuck in my teeth, so I needed a bottle of water to swish them around my mouth. Because these are algae tabs they tasted a bit like seaweed (go figure). That said, there was a definitely more pep in my step during the run that I did after. I love that they come with a convenient container to carry them in your pocket/purse etc. As well, the fact that there are so many nutrients and protein in them, they really help to speed up recovery from hard workouts.

These are Amber’s favourite cookie.  We were introduced to these by her daycare – every evening when I pick her up she gets a late “treat” because she’s so hungry.  One evening when I picked her up she was eating these  LifeStyle Selections Blueberry Brown Sugar Cookies with Flax:

At first I was a little upset that she was eating chocolate chip cookies, but when I got a closer look I realized those were dehydrated blueberries in them. The ingredient list is great too! I’d tell you more about them, but I enjoyed the box we bought so much that I ate the entire thing, and don’t even have the box anymore 🙂

    I could use some energy bits at around 2 p.m. every day especially if it’s slow at work. Your Dad needs them every evening around 9 p.m. LOL

    I can honestly say i havent tried any of those. Guess i have some homework to do. Always so many new products coming out that its hard to keep up. I feel like dairy free and gluten free are the fastest rising, what’s your take on this? Thanks
