Turning 40 last summer was great. My friends threw a wonderful party for me at my place, and even dressed me up “sexy” for a night on the town:
Yes – my friends really did make me wear this wonderful outfit to the bar.
While turning 40 was an absolutely amazing experience, the changes in my body since then have been not-so-fun.
Sex in your 40’s – what to expect:
As I’ve shared before, turning 40 has brought along her friend perimenopause (and soon menopause) along to the party. Perimenopause has a whole slew of awesome side-effects (for lack of a better term), including such amazing things like a depletion of estrogen which makes vaginal lubrication dry up like the ol’ sahara desert. This unfortunately can make sex feel like sand paper. Sadly, vaginal dryness is an expected and normal symptom for women reaching menopause.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. Being intimate and close with your partner is important for our overall emotional and physical health- perhaps even more so as we age, as we need to keep that emotional closeness with them. Our bodies are going through lots of changes.
Thankfully there are a few things we can do about it:
1. Visit your gynaecologist for a check-up and a run-down on what to expect.
2. Add a tube of lubricant to your shopping list. Look for a natural-feeling lubricant with a thicker texture, designed to relieve discomfort caused by vaginal dryness. By facilitating sex, a lubricant like K-Y helps you build that much-needed emotional closeness with your partner. K-Y is safe to use regularly and is the #1 brand trusted by couples and professionals. Here are a few recommended K-Y products that can provide discreet, long lasting relief and lubrication when you need it:
- K-Y Jelly
- K-Y Liquid
- K-Y Sensual Silk
- K-Y Warming Jelly (I personally prefer the K-Y Warming Jelly and have been using it for years.)
I encourage you to try out any of these K-Y intimacy products to alleviate vaginal dryness and heighten intimacy with your partner.
Lifestyle factors can also play role in how good our sex lives remain. The usual things like staying active, getting enough sleep, and eating healthy, nutritious foods will also help us to enjoy sex in our 40’s and even beyond!
What changes have you experienced in your 40’s?
