The Road to Boston: Weeks 25 & 26

Hey guys! I’m happy (ecstatic!) to report that the good ol’ ankle is recovering well and that I’m returning to running this week, yay!!!  There’s still some swelling, and some bruising, but it’s essentially pain free!

The peroneals (muscles up the outside of my lower leg) are a bit tender, so I’ll be easing back into running very slowly this week. But I can finally run again!  I ran 5k today and it was amazing! My pace was a little slower, but after two weeks of virtually no running, it felt so good just to be able to hit the pavement.

Here’s my training summary for the past two weeks:

Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Strength training with my coach – we focused on my balance and proprioception, and loosening my gastrocnemius and soleus muscles.
Wednesday: Rest
Thursday: Strength training with my coach – we focused on my balance and proprioception, and loosening my gastrocnemius and soleus muscles.
Friday: Cross-trainer
Saturday: Rest
Sunday: Rest

Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Strength training with my coach – we focused on my balance and proprioception, and loosening my gastrocnemius and soleus muscles.
Wednesday: 5k run – pace was good, but I was incredibly afterwards.
Thursday: Strength training with my coach – we focused on upper body and core strength.
Friday: Cross-trainer, played lacrosse in the evening.
Saturday: Rest
Sunday: Rest

I’m not where I wanted to be with my training at this point – I was supposed to try for a sub 1:50 half marathon on Saturday but had to miss it because the left leg just isn’t ready for that kind of distance yet.  So frustrating!  But this week it looks like I’ll finally be able to get back to my regular training routine, albeit not at the same pace or distances as before the injury (yet). Here’s my “plan”:

Monday: 5k run – done!
Tuesday: Strength training with my coach – lower body?
Wednesday: 5k run
Thursday: Strength training with my coach – upper body?
Friday: Cross-trainer, playing lacrosse in the evening
Saturday: 10k run
Sunday: Rest

On June 1st I’ll be running in a 10k race with my friend Juliette.  I’m really looking forward to “racing” but I don’t anticipate on setting a PB or anything crazy like that.  It’s just nice to be back in the race atmosphere with the camaraderie of a friend.  You never realise how much running or being active means to you until you can’t do it.

Have a great week everyone!

Yay, glad you are back to running!

How about joining me at MEC race 3? I’m thinking of doing the 10k, assuming my injury issues are all resolved. Stupid injuries.
