Canada Day 5K Race Recap

 A few weeks ago my best running friend, Juliette asked on facebook if anyone wanted to join her and run the Green Germann Sakran Canada Day 5k race.  Other than the three colourful runs I’ve done over the past year, I haven’t done a 5k race in a while.  I find that pushing myself to run as fast as I possibly can for 5k to be very draining and not the least bit pleasant.  I’d much rather jog for 2 hours thank-you-very-much than to run for 26 min at the brink of fainting or puking.  But something weird took over me, and I signed up. 

I woke up early, but not 5 am super early, but early enough considering it was a holiday (6:35 am).  I got dressed in my red and white (a red tank top, and a white running skirt), and had a nice breakfast of Multi-Grain Cheerios + Ancient Grains.  The kids woke up while I was getting ready, so I fed them breakfast too.  Sierra, my oldest, started crying as I left – she wanted to come race with me, so I promised her that next year she could come (and she’ll likely beat me).

It was already HOT at 7:15 am when I stepped outside to drive over to pick up Juliette, Laura, Jason and Joel.  I was worried because I don’t handle heat well.

 Before the 5k there was a 1k kids fun run that in retrospect I should have signed the kids up for. It was adorable – there were small young kids grinning from ear to ear, and bigger kids racing like it was the Olympics.  One little boy went out WAY too fast, and came back bawling his eyes out because some other boys paced themselves better and beat him.  Don’t worry kid, I can totally relate to your pain as I’ve done that more than once myself.

After the kids race, it was our turn to race.  I lined up with Juliette and Laura, while the speed demons (Joel and Jason) lined up near the front.  Once the airhorn signalled the start of the race we all took off.  I quickly learned that I should have moved up with Joel and Jason because I was dodging walkers walking 5 across etc.  When will I ever learn?

My first 1k was fast – perhaps even too fast as all I could think about was how dizzy I was.  I looked down at my watch and saw that I was running 4:39/km!  I saw Jason ahead of me and tried to catch up to him, but just couldn’t do it – I was WAY too hot to go any faster.  I then slowed down and settled into a more comfortable pace until the 2.5k turnaround.  At that point I was dying and needed water, so I slowed to walk and drink.  I walked and walked and walked. I think I walked for a good 150m, then started running again.  My legs felt much more refreshed, and my breathing was under better control, so I started sprinting.  Why I thought it was a good idea to sprint, I’ll never know.  I’ll chalk that up to a lack of 5k experience.  I ran hard for a km, then had to stop and walk again.  Ugh! It was so HOT out!!! I walked for about 75m, then told myself to suck it up and to finish the race.  I could see the boardwalk and Jason running ahead of me so I booted it to try and finish just behind him.  I glanced at my watch and realised that despite walking twice, if I kept going I would reach my goal of a sub 26min 5k.  As I sprinted to the finish the clock showed 26:33 leaving me totally anxious to see the race results to find out if my chip time was sub 26 min.

After I finished I inhaled a muscle milk and tried not to puke.  Not because of the drink (it was yummy) but because the heat totally was getting to me.  I cheered for Juliette as she finished, then she came with me to cheer Laura on as she finished.  Jason saw her rounding the corner towards the finish, so jumped in to run with her and encourage her to the finish.  The two of them looked so cute together that I couldn’t resist taking their picture:

We then headed to look up the race results, where we were very very surprised to learn that my 25:55 official chip time was good enough for  4th place in my age group!!!

All in all it was a fantastic way to kick start the Canada Day holiday and I’ll definitely be back to run it next year (and will remember to register the kids for the kids 1k run).

    Awesome, I should see if there is a 1K that Valentina could start out with… then we could build up 🙂 I don’t like running in the heat either, I know most of them start later in the morning 🙂

    Great race! Now I almost regret skipping that one this year, I would have liked to have seen you 🙂 And I do like the finish on the pier. But I couldn’t deal with the idea of a 5k in the heat/humidity, plus I hate the part of that race that’s run on sand (although it’s rained enough lately that it probably wasn’t so much an issue for you).
