My Awesome Marathon Playlist

study published last year discovered a direct correlation between fast-paced music and athletic performance. Apparently, the speed of the music (measured by bpm) influences the pace that you run.  For instance, if you run a 5:50/km or a 9:23/mile (my goal pace for the marathon) you should listen to songs that are 158 bpm such as Blink-182’s “What’s My Age Again” and so forth.  

Now I only half believe this because c’mon, there is no music that is fast enough to make me run a 4 min mile no matter how hard I wish for that to happen!   But I’m totally a music person and I cannot run without it so I did what any sane runner does while tapering… I made myself a new AWESOME marathon playlist and now I’m going to make you suffer through reading the entire 35 song, 126 minute* list….<insert evil laugh>

Question: What songs are on your workout/running playlist?

*I am well aware that it will take me longer than 2 hours and 6 min to complete the marathon so my plan is to listen to the playlist on repeat. I sincerely hope that I don’t have to listen to this a third time.

    Some great song choices there! I am terrible or never making playlists. My iPod is just on shuffle of all songs and I have some very random and weird songs that come on during my runs sometimes.

      I was pretty bad too but got stuck singing along with the Wiggles one too many times so I had to get my phone organised 🙂

    Good for you on focusing so much on beat and pace. I read that and have to confess, my playlist has a mix of beats since when I tried to find my target beat the songs made me sad. I should try again.

    Cool post. For the record, I actually did a research study on the effect of music on training in college…Very similar results!

    I have to say that I have several of these on my long run playlist as well. I am really loving All About the Bass and Shake it Off at the moment

    Here’s me, the odd woman out as usual. I have never run with music, not once. I like listening to the sounds around me… birds, traffic, church bells, kids yelling, and my own thoughts. I do sing to myself from time to time, though!

    Awesome playlist. I don’t often listen to music when I run so I am not sure what I would put on my playlist although Shake it Off would definitely have to be on there!

      I think I might have to start trying to run without music, I’m sure I’m missing an amazing opportunity to enjoy the sounds of nature.

    I use audiobooks, so no playlist for me. 🙂 I stream my music on pandora when I get sick of listening to a book. 🙂

    I haven’t listened to music when I run in years but lately I’ve been thinking about it. The only thing that stops me is a comfortable way to carry my phone.
