#MotivateMe Monday: Back to the Grind


Happy Monday everyone!

By now pretty much everyone is back to the regular old routines of school and work.  My gang started back up on Tuesday and were pretty excited to do so.  Unfortunately it rained and was also too hot for their back-to-school clothes, so instead they wore some old clothes so that they wouldn’t get ruined.  I did manage to get them to stop jumping in puddles long enough to get them to pose for our typical first day of school picture outside of the school:


Amber is in Senior Kindergarten, Brooke is in Grade 3, and Sierra is in Grade 5.

Our week was busy but fun.  In addition to the back-to-school chaos, we also were rushing around to softball rep tryouts, skating lessons, team dinners and hockey.  On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Sierra worked really hard at softball rep tryouts and her hard work paid off… She made the local rep softball team for her age group!  This weekend Sierra and Brooke started back up with hockey and skating lessons, and little Amber started skating lessons and her first year of hockey!

By making the rep softball team Sierra has helped to make our busy winter even busier as she’ll have “Winter ball” softball practice in a gym 1-2 times/week.  Ahhhhhh I guess this is what happens when two sporty peeps fall in love.  

Workout wise my motivation was all over the place.  One day I felt great, and the next I felt like a truck hit me and didn’t feel like doing anything.  This what my “training” looked like this week:

Monday: Labour Day – spent the day relaxing around the pool
Tuesday: 4 mile run before work
Wednesday: Rest – rushed kids around to tryouts and skating lessons
Thursday: 4.41 mile run before work
Friday: Rest
Saturday: 40 min cycling + kettlebell interval workout
Sunday: 40 min cycling + kettlebell interval workout

I really struggled to get out for my runs with my friends on Tuesday and Thursday.  Tuesday’s run felt really hard and I just want to walk instead.   Thursday’s run was really tough to motivate myself to get out of bed for, but once I got running it was really fun!


On Saturday I decided to move my bike back inside onto the indoor trainer for the winter.  Hubby was out running errands and I couldn’t go for a run so I decided to go for a ride on the trainer instead. I hate cycling for long periods of time because I get crazy bored and stop pedalling hard, so I set up the GYMBOSS app on my phone to create intervals so I can alternate hard pedalling with kettlebell strength exercises.  I pedalled hard for 5 min then took a 1 minute break to do a kettlebell exercise: kettlebell swings, single arm cleans, squat cleans, hamstring bridges while doing skull crushers with the kettlebell etc. Afterwards I did a 20 minute ab workout.  I was really SWEATY by the end, but had a blast!

On Sunday I also had a blast apple picking and feeding animals at a birthday party with my youngest daughter while my two older daughters were at hockey with hubby.

This week will be a bit quieter as we don’t have swimming lessons, rep tryouts or softball.  We just have skating lessons on Wednesday and Friday nights + our usual weekend hockey so I should have a chance to get caught up with laundry, housework etc.  

My training plan looks like this:

Monday: 5 mile run before work
Tuesday: Bike + kettlebells interval workout
Wednesday: 5 or more mile run + massage & shopping with my BRF
Thursday: Bike + kettlebells interval workout
Friday: Yoga
Saturday: 16k long run
Sunday: Bike + kettlebells interval workout

Oh I almost forgot!  I am so excited to announce that I am once again a Burnbrae Farms Ambassador for the ScotiaBank Toronto Waterfront Half Marathon!  You may remember that I was a Burnbrae Farms Ambassador for the Mississauga Half Marathon this past Spring when I ran my personal best half marathon.  I love love love Burnbrae Farm eggs, so this is a great honour to represent them at the STWM this year.  I have planned out longer runs in the 16k-19k range for the next three weeks of my training followed by a shorter 12k long run the weekend before the race.  Wish me luck!

    When I’m doing indoor workouts like treadmill or bike I do much better with some sort of interval workout. The changing pace or difficulty keeps my mind distracted.

    Your girls are adorable! And you still amaze me how you juggle it ALL! Amazing woman! I am currently mid marathon cycle. 7 weeks to go!!! last week was a taper week for me and this week I am back in full swing. Starting Monday off light with some yoga and flexibility work as I have a TON on my plate today…doc appt, workshop even planning, kid, dinner, grocery shopping…you know. All that fun stuff!     I found running last week was difficult due to the extreme heat we were having. Thanks to the cooler weather this week, I’ll be catching up on some training for my upcoming 5 km. looks like you will be having a busy winter! Have fun!
