#MotivateMe Monday: Back to the Grind + Vacation Recap

If you’re new here, #MotivateME Monday is a weekly link-up co-hosted by myself and Running Rachel for accountability and encouragement. It’s a place for us to share goals, plans, successes and have each other to pick us up to keep moving forward.

Happy Monday everyone!!

I am sadly headed back to work from vacation this morning, oh how I dread going back! I took a peek in at my work email and this week is going to be crazy busy, there’s a ton of things to do already.   That said, I really did have a great vacation. We definitely filled it full and enjoyed every minute of it. Perhaps too much? I need a vacation from my vacation!

So where did we go on vacation? Saratoga Springs, New York, for the second year in a row! We love watching the horse racing down there.  The ambiance feels like a throw back to the 1920’s before the Depression when life was free and fun.  The women all wear dresses and hats, and most of the gentlemen dress up.  There are lots of lemonade stands (or wine if you prefer).  The Clubhouse and the Grandstand have both been maintained in their original design: wood and open air.

Here’s a few pictures from our trip:

Dressed up for a day of racing fun – you can see the Carousel Dining area above me and an ice-cold lemonade stand.

And…. they’re off!

Horses, horses, horses… they’re everywhere!

On the Monday I ran in a fun 1 mile race on the harness track, I put up my race recap on Friday (spoiler alert: I placed in my age group!).

On Tuesday we drove to Albany to do some shopping (we mostly bought things for the kids at Dick’s Sporting Goods), then we watched the new Mission Impossible movie together. On Wednesday we spent another day at the track, then that evening I took hubby to Friendly’s for his first ever visit there. Friendly’s was my favourite restaurant when I was a kid – I made my parents take us there everytime we took a car trip to the US.

On Thursday we drove back to Ottawa where my in-laws were looking after our kids (a 5 hour drive from Saratoga), then on Friday we drove home to Toronto (a 6 hour drive), and arrived home just in time for my daughter’s softball practice.  Then Saturday we drove an hour to Brantford for the OSSTA (Ontario Select Softball Tournament Association) Provincial Championships.  My daughter played in 3 games.  They lost their first game, then won their second game, then lost their third exciting and close game by 1 run.  We drove home that night, then drove back on Sunday morning for her to play in another game.  They battled back but lost a very close game by 1 run to one of the best teams in the province.  They lost badly to this team earlier in the season, but really showed how much they had improved by how close the game was.  It was an exciting weekend!

Sierra laid done the perfect bunt, got an RBI, then stole her way around the bases on errors!

Workout wise I got in the 1 mile race, a 5k run on Wednesday plus a gym workout, then a body weight workout at the park between softball games on Saturday (squats, lunge jumps, push ups, tricep dips, step ups).  This week I hope to be MUCH better.  I’m planning on getting up 6 mornings this week because I have learned that is really the only time I have available to be active.

Here’s this week’s plan:

Monday : Easy early morning jog with the O’Dark thirty crew.
Tuesday: Dailyburn workout with the O’Dark thirty crew (or by myself if they aren’t up for it).
Wednesday: Get my arse out of bed for a quick 8k run with the O’Dark thirty crew + coaching softball practice.
Thursday: Another Dailyburn workout with the O’Dark thirty crew + lunch spinning class at GoodLife Fitness.
Friday: Early morning run with the O’Dark thirty crew.
Saturday: Early morning bike ride before Amber’s soccer day of champs.
Sunday: Longish run.

While it sucks that vacation is over, another part of me is happy to be back into my normal routine, home in my bed, etc.  I have a hard time being motivated on my own now that I’ve gotten so used to working out with my running besties.  You’ll notice that I’ve added some spinning and a bike ride into this week’s plan.  That’s because I’ve signed up to do a relay sprint triathlon with my friends Christine and Juliette on September 5th.  Christine will do the swim, I’m going to do the bike, and Juliette is going to do the run.  Our team name is either Swim, Bike, Run, Drink or Tri Now Wine Later.  We’ve done more of the wine thing this summer so it’s time to get back at it 😀

Have a great week everyone!

Love your triathalon team name! I’d love to try a relay triathalon it would give me a good idea of the event before deciding if I could do the whole thing on my own.

You can totally do it on your own – I find them much easier than half marathons or marathons. They just aren’t as hard mentally.

Run now, wine later is what it says on the back of my branded tank! It’s a good motto to go by so I think Tri now wine later makes a good team name. If you are interested in branded tanks, I can put you in touch with my sister who does promotional items as a side home business. She can make small # and she inexpensive.
