Motivation Monday: Putting My Money Where My Mouth Is

Happy Monday everyone! This is my Mamavation Monday post for October 29, 2012.

I hope that you all have had a great week – the weather was awesome for the most part, but man, wasn’t the weekend yucky?

View outside from the indoor track at the Sports Centre.

I’m really lucky that the sports centre where my kids have swimming, gymnastics, skating lessons and hockey has an indoor track around the top of one of the rinks:

View of the track.

So on Saturdays, while hubby is in parent & tot gymnastics class with Amber, and Sierra and Brooke are in their own gymnastics class, I have about 45 min to run around the track. I was so happy to have that option this week because I know that I would have come up with a million excuses not to run in the cold rain. Snow, wind, extreme heat – I don’t mind those. But rain. I.don’t.do.rain. I hate it!

Having the track available is great! (Now I just have to remember that it’s there on Tuesday or Friday nights after I’ve missed a run due to work etc…). No excuses right?

Speaking of excuses… I’m sick of hearing myself whine (not to be confused with wine), so I downloaded the GymPact app for my phone and gave it a go this week. I’m putting my money on the line with this app. If I miss a workout, I have to pay $5! Eeeek! How’s that for motivation?!

My first workout on Friday counted – I ran a 2.5km loop outside two times, but my workout at the indoor track on Saturday did not. The app said that the GPS was not turned on on my ismoothrun app and that my workout was recorded with the accelerometer instead. Next week I’ll have to “check-in” at the Sports Centre instead of trying to use the GPS on the track. Good thing the app gives you a few days until your first “official” pact. I’ll try checking in/recording every workout I do this coming week to try and figure out work-arounds for any bugs I encounter. Oh – and the good people at GymPact asked me to write about my experiences in two weeks from now on their blog – how cool is that?

Now time for accomplishments…

This week was a bit better than last week because I managed to workout 4 times:

Monday: Spinning class
Tuesday: Run   too wet and rainy (I forgot all about the indoor track)
Wednesday: BodyPump!
Thursday: Worked from home and worked right through my lunch!
Friday: Ran 5.5K
Saturday: Ran 5.5K
Sunday: Rest

Looking ahead….

Next week my plan is pretty much the same as last week’s, only the weather is supposed to be horrendous, so I hope I don’t have to pay money to GymPact if Frankenstorm really does hit:

Monday:  Spinning class
Tuesday:  Run 5k
Wednesday:  BodyPump!
Thursday:  Spinning class
Friday:  Run 5k
Saturday:  Ran 5k
Sunday:  Kettlebells

Oh and I almost forgot!  I also put my money where my mouth is by registering for the Chilly Half Marathon, again… I wonder if I can beat last year’s time?

Have a fantastic week!

PS  – I’m trying out  FaceBook Social Comments  on the blog for the next few weeks as a test/case study as part of my work with the Ontario Women’s Triathlon committee.  Do you mind using your FaceBook account to comment, please?  Thanks!

That sucks 🙁 Did you know that if you have weights at home that you can look up BodyPump tracks on YouTube? If you search for say: "BodyPump Squat Track" you can find full length instructor-led tracks of various BodyPump tracks 🙂

I have wondered about these kinds of apps…it's part of why I think the HOliday Bootie Buster challenge will be better this year… you tend to follow through with things you pay for!

Could you provide me with more info re: Bootie Buster Challenge? I'd love to share it with my community. Thanks!

PS in case you care I don't like the FB comments because I can't click through to people's posts.

Thanks for the feedback! The Triathlon that I'm testing this out for does have a completely different (non-blogging) community, so you're right, this may not be a very accurate comparison.

I saw your post about the gympact app and thought it might be cool… I have an Android phone so I would have to wait for that version if I did it. I’m not concerned about missing a workout, but not a huge fan of the idea of always having to check in or take my phone on a run, that type of thing I would forget.

I don't mind the facebook comments at all, my blog and account are linked up a bit, so it makes no difference to me.

This app sounds awesome… only downside is I don’t go to a gym or run at the moment…. So I don’t think my home workouts in my home gym will work 🙁

Maybe when I start running agian I will use this to MAKE myself keep up with it!

I think that I need to put my money up for motivation as well. I have been putting off working out for so long and it is about time to get my booty back in gear!

Hi there. I am okay with using fb to comment, although as a blogger I get bummed because there is no return traffic to my site (comment luv). Also, I am not a huge fan of my comments being posted to my personal fb page. (not that i think it will happen, but it could deter comments). <3

Glad you reminded me about the indoor track. I don't like running at night because I am scared but I can do the indoor track at the gym! Thanks!
