Motivation Monday: Do What You Love

Hey everyone! Wasn’t this past weekend gorgeous? Here in Toronto we broke the high temperature for November 11th that was set in the 1930’s – we hit a very beautiful 17.8C! (Trust me, that’s REALLY warm for this time of year here in the great white north).

As you all know, a month ago I went to Blissdom Canada, a blogging and social media conference here in Toronto. I had a great time, learned a lot, and have been mulling over something in my head ever since. You see, with each of the learning sessions, I observed that the community leaders were not only GOOD at what they do, they also LOVE what they do. They have passion and their passion has grown into a deep knowledge. This has caused me to do a lot of reflecting:

  • What do I love?
  • What do I do well?

My response to both of these questions was the same. I love social media and tweaking websites. I also do those well because I’ve spent so much time crafting my hobby here on Fitness Cheerleader, and on my other two sites: Big List of Giveaways, and Mom on the Run. My particular strengths lies in WordPress development and social media marketing.

Fast forward to Saturday morning. I was greeted by two messages from friends. One of them had their website hacked and needed help removing the bad code, and the other’s site was loading slowly, and frequently timing out. A few emails, texts and DM’s later, both of their sites were back up and running. Afterwards I asked my husband for advice on how I could turn this skill into profit. (No judging – we all want to earn an income from what we enjoy, right?). We discussed how I could establish myself as an “expert”, and how I could earn the respect that I deserve. When people consider you an expert, and respect your skills, they then become willing to pay you for your services, right?

So at the urging of my husband, I “threw together” my own business website. (Seriously – this took about 3 hours after the kids went to bed Saturday night).

I’m starting my own company, Borden Lane Solutions, and I’m so excited to be doing what I love, even if it’s part-time.

Fitness

So how does this week’s theme of “Doing what you love” fit in with my fitness (afterall, that’s what this site is really about, right?). As you know, lately I’ve been struggling to get back into a fitness routine, and I finally figured out why:

I haven’t been doing what I love.

I love training for races. I love having that goal. I love the bragging rights of “I’m training for XYZ race”.

I’m not really one to be active for the sake of being active. And I also don’t find “weight maintenance” particularly motivating either. But I LOVE to race. Two weeks ago I registered for the Chilly Half Marathon, and since then my motivation has soared! I had such a great training week, that by Saturday I needed to take a day off because my first “over-training” sign was looming her ugly head: Anxiety. I had a hard time sleeping Friday night and was exhausted Saturday.

Monday: 1 hr lunch time spinning class
Tuesday 6k lunch run
Wednesday: Lunch BodyPump class
Thursday: 1 hr lunch spinning class
Friday: 6k lunch run
Saturday: Rest
Sunday: Raked leaves and played with the kiddos

My training plan for this week:

This week my plan is to not over-train to the point where I’m too run down to actually do my long run. So I’ve made a modification and decided to throw in a rest day on Thursday and Saturday so that I can run on Sunday:

Monday: 1 hr lunch time spinning class
Tuesday 6k lunch run
Wednesday: Lunch BodyPump class
Thursday: Rest
Friday: 6k lunch run
Saturday: Rest
Sunday: 10k long run

Have a great week everyone!

I love to play hockey. I’m not all that awesome at it, but I love it. A couple seasons ago I was voted most improved player, something about losing 80 pounds swayed the voting my way. Fitness and sports blended very nicely together for me!

I like your motivation bit though and it’s so true, it is much easier to be in a training frame of mind when you have a goal to work towards. That type of thinking had me mulling over an idea in my head while running yesterday. Look for some sort of announcement on my blog this week!

Well, you already know what I love! I love making cards so I’ve decided to share my love of cardmaking with the children at Sick Children’s hospital in Toronto. I will be making children’s Christmas cards and will be either delivering or sending them to a woman in Oshawa who in turn delivers the cards to the hospital. Here is her blog: http://www.kardsforkidshsc.blogspot.ca/ I’ve already made 4 cards and will be making more in the coming weeks.
