The Greatest Love of All

Remember that old Whitney Houston song, “The Greatest Love of All”?  

Yanno… this one:

I struggled for a long time to find that self-love Whitney sings about. You see, I had a LOT of self-hate from an abusive relationship in high school. Sadly – after those 2 bad years, I spent another 20 yrs trying to regain the love I had for myself as a child. SIGH

But guess what? I’ve never been happier than I am now! Its TRUE! I think I’ve finally found the greatest love of all – love for myself.

You would think that being 5 weeks post-partum, with a lovely post-partum body (those of you who’ve had kids know what I’m talking about) I would feel crappy about myself. But I don’t. In fact I rather like my pooch – it reminds me of how wonderful my body is.

Somewhere over the past summer, I learned to eat healthy and exercise for the sheer joy of it. Being pregnant and exercising meant I was no longer stepping on the scale to see if my exercise efforts were producing results. Gone were the days of thermogenics, disordered eating and chronic over exercising. In fact, I only stood on the scale for midwife appointments – I used to be a 3x/day weigher.

I ran because it was FUN! And now I feel great because I can now exercise for the enjoyment – not to punish myself for eating 2 doughnuts for breakfast (yes, I did that yesterday 🙂 and I didn`t workout that day and it`s awesome!)

I want YOU to have that strong, confident feeling too, so I thought I’d share some tips with you:

  1. Throw out your scale, or at least remove the battery from it. STOP WEIGHING YOURSELF!
  2. Write down 3 things you like about yourself
  3. Write down 3 things other people would say they like about you
  4. Write those 6 things on sticky notes and put them around your mirror
  5. When you wake up each morning, read those notes. Read them until you BELIEVE them
  6. Smile – smile at your reflection in the mirror because you know what? That person you see looking at you is beautiful… inside & out.

Try it – I dare you.

    I used to have a lot of self doubt and suffered from low self esteem but then I read a book written by a Christian called Love Thyself. The author is Walter Trobisch and the book really opened up my eyes. I loaned it out years ago and never got it back. I wish I still had the book as it was awesome! I still have moments of insecurity and self doubt but then I think of that book and the powerful message it contained.

    Just looked this book up – it is actually titled Love Yourself and is available on Amazon.ca – hmm – might just buy it!
