The Road to Boston: Week 10 Recap

Happy Monday everyone! Can you believe that I announced my goal of trying to qualify for Boston over 10 weeks ago?!? Wow! Time is flying by fast. This week Mother Nature decided to test my commitment to my goal by throwing a polar vortex our way that brought us ridiculously cold temperatures and windchills. Was it cold where you live too?

As you know, I absolutely detest the dreadmill. Afterall, this was invented for jails! But alas, I sucked it up and headed to my gym, GoodLife Fitness, on Tuesday and Wednesday at lunch to crank out 8 sweaty kilometers on the hamster wheel. It definitely wasn’t my first workout choice, but I wasn’t interested in seeing if I could turn myself into a human popsicle by slipping on some ice in a deserted park either. Thankfully I have a decent data plan on my phone so I watched an episode of Mad Men on Netflix while I ran each day. (I really got into Mad Men after our Mad Men New Year’s Eve party). With the TV show as a distraction the dreadmill run didn ‘t seem nearly as bad as I had previously remembered running on a dreadmill was. Perhaps my view is also a bit tainted because compared to the crazy weather a had been running in, the dreadmill seemed way more comfortable and dare I say it… almost pleasant.

Wednesday night I was invited to Change It Up 360 in my town to try a Kettlebell/TRX fusion class with personal trainer Matt.

It was a crazy hard strength workout! Matt really made me work and didn ‘t let me cheat. I often would alter my form in order to make it easier, and he quickly corrected me each and every time. Boo. The workout alternated upper and lower body exercises with my core stabilizing me. We also alternated using different sized kettlebells and the TRX suspension system. I was barely able to walk out of there, my legs and arms were so weak! I ‘ll partially blame it on running 5 miles earlier that day, but I gotta admit that workout was also crazy hard, but in a good way.

Thursday I forgot to bring my running shoes to the gym for spinning, so I set my road bike up on my indoor trainer after the kids went to bed and did an easy spin to help move out all of the waste materials in my muscles from Wednesdays kettlebell/TRX workout while watching yet another Mad Men episode on Netflix :grin:.

On Friday I went to a BodyPump/CRX (core strength class) at GoodLife Fitness. I wasn’t fully recovered from Wednesday so I lifted lighter weights than usual.

On Saturday the weather was finally warm enough to run outside. Unfortunately the sidewalks and roads were completely ice covered, and I think skates would have made my 10k run way easier. Then that night my best friend from highschool came over to hang out with us and have dinner. It was so nice to see her again!

Then yesterday (Sunday), I ran 16k. I had to go fairly quick because I farted around too long procrastinating my run but had to be back home by 11 so that hubby could take the girls to their hockey. The roads were a bit better than Saturday, but not by much. I was tempted not to go, but was very happy and proud of myself later in the day because I sucked it up and just got it done. All in all Sunday was a pretty productive day. I got my run in, washed all of our laundry, went grocery shopping, and moved Running Rachel over to her own hosting!

10 week total: 236k

This coming week is a recovery, cut-back week for me. On Friday I ‘ll be taking the train to Montreal with 7 girlfriends for a girls weekend away. My friend Christine is turning 40, so we’re all going to honour her. I ‘m really excited because I’ve never been to Montreal before, though I hear that there are lots of fun things to see and do. I ‘ll be honest in that I ‘m not anticipating on doing any running while there. I ‘m hoping to be able to dance off some calories though 😀
Here’s my workout plan:
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: 8k run
Wednesday: 8k run before work, BodyPump at lunch
Thursday: Spinning class
Friday, Saturday & Sunday: Rest/Girls weekend away.

    It only got down to 8F here and I ran outside. It was a horrible ordeal. Thankfully, we don’t normally have extreme cold, or I would be investing in a dread mill.

    That’s a lot of ice!! Stay safe!! This week I am focusing on strengthening my hip and hamstring muscles. I am finally back to running next week… wahoo! 🙂

    I start the contest at work next week, I think I will do a small recap here and there, I am really going to push myself with more distance and getting my speed up. The weather has been beyond cold except for the past couple of days, I hope it stays this temp or warmer for a little while at least 🙂 Have a great week
