Sierra’s 9th Birthday Run or Dye Race Recap

9 years ago, my hubby and I had the shock of our lives, at only 8 months pregnant my water broke as soon as we got home from work, and within 20 minutes I was in labour. It was 4 weeks too soon for our baby… or so we thought. My first step was to call my friend Tracy, she had birthed two kids so she was my source of all things pregnancy and baby related.

Our conversation went a little something like this:

Me: Hey Trace, I… I…. I think either my water broke or I peed my pants, except the pee keeps coming every time I move.
Tracy: Yay!!! You’re having a baby!!!
Me: No I’m not – the baby isn’t due for a month. What should I do?
Tracy: Doood! Congratulations, you’re having a baby!!
Tracy: Call the hospital, you’re having a baby.
Me: No – it’s too soon. How long will this pee keep coming? I can’t be like this for a month.
Tracy: Go to the hospital – you’re having a baby!

I was in serious denial, but there was no questioning what was happening as soon as the contractions started. And boy, hubby and I were SCARED! We were so excited to meet our first baby and had waited with anticipation for months, but we knew it was WAY TOO SOON! I clung to him in fear as we raced to the hospital, a 30 min drive away. Less than 4 hours after we arrived at the hospital we got to meet the wonderful little girl who would forever change our lives:

Little miss Sierra barely fit into her car seat.   But despite weighing only 5lbs, she was strong, and healthy!

For Sierra’s first year of life we watched her slowly catch up to her baby peers. She learned to sit, crawl, stand, and walk. By the time she was a year old she had fully caught up and you wouldn’t know that she had been born too soon.

Time has flown by so fast, and this year she turned NINE!

She asked to celebrate her birthday in typical Sierra fashion – by doing something active:

Run or Dye! (Man, I love that girl!).  So back in January we invited a few of Sierra’s friends to run Run or Dye with us, followed by a BBQ and swim back at our place.

We drove up to Albion Hills in my van, and made it in one piece with plenty of time to spare, despite having to drive on the spare tire.  (Hubby damaged the tire by driving too close to the curb the night before the race).

Here’s the kids “before”:

(Sierra is kneeling behind Amber’s stroller, proudly rocking her running skirt).

Sierra has been creating joy in our lives for nine years now, and her choice for a birthday party totally matches her personality.  So excited about the race, she and her sisters barely slept the night before (especially Amber who woke my up at 5:37 am on race morning).  They had good reason to be excited though, this race was fun!

This is a picture of the girls standing in the start corral…  The colour was everywhere!

This “run” turned out to be more of a hike, and the umbrella stroller to push Amber in was a poor choice. The course at Albion Hills was completely off-road! This only added to the fun for the kids – kids love nature, getting dirty, jumping over mud puddles and climbing (perhaps I should take them to a trail race?).

The girls favourite colour station by far was blue because it turned them into a group of Smurfs:

“La la la-la la la,  Sing a happy song. La la la-la la la, Smurf it all day long.”

We all had a fantastic time, and enjoyed getting doused in colour.  Here we are after – smiling, laughing and having a ton of fun!

Sierra’s ninth birthday was a blast, and I’m so proud of her for choosing an active event, she’s a chip off the old block 🙂 Perhaps she’ll be running other races with me shortly?!?

Happy Birthday 9th Sierra!!

I love this post… it’s so awesome that she chose this… I hope one day my Valentina will choose something like this too… of course I will have to make those choices first and eventually she will follow 🙂 The girls looked like they had so much fun 😀

I just wanted to let you know that I did try the couch to 5k but at the time I see had a good deal of weight to lose so I I was not comfortable for running great lengths… I am hoping to change that this summer… try it again. I am not a quitter, so eventually ;(
