Family Fun at Flamboro Valley Camping Resort

Every summer I try to exchange the hustle and bustle of the suburbs for the quiet and tranquillity of nature in the form of a nice family camping trip. Life is about making memories and unplugging and creating camping memories are some of the best moments I’ve ever spent with my daughters, so this weekend I unplugged, packed the girls up and headed out to Flamboro Valley Camping Resort to make some memories. Ahhhhh fresh air, memories and FUN!

Last summer, my friend Tracy invited myself and my two older girls to go camping with her and her two boys, her friend Amanda and her daughter Lily.  We had so much fun, that this year we expanded the camping trip to also include my youngest daughter Amber, and even another family!

Our tent from last year barely fit the three of us, so this year I asked for a tent upgrade for my birthday….

My hubby rocks!  It fit 2 QUEEN sized air beds!

I took Friday off of work, and after a quick run in the morning, we headed over to the camp ground bright and early.  From our house it’s about a 32 minute drive away which is really nice in-case we have to head home for whatever reason (like Amber’s Saturday morning soccer game).  We arrived too early to check-in, so we parked the van at the camp office, then walked the mile through the camp ground down to meet Tracy at our camp site.  We then promptly met this cute little fellow:

Well hello there cute froggy (or as Amber would say “woggy”).

We grabbed Tracy’s parking pass from her, then hiked back up to the camp office to get the van with all of our camping gear.  The walk was a good mile and pretty much all uphill.  I was surprised how well Amber handled all the walking – she was so excited about her first camping experience that she pretty much would have walked any where.  We then drove the van back to the site.

Our site was nice and spacious – we were able to fit our tent and three other equally big ones.  There was a forest behind the site for the kids to explore in, and we were two sites away from the washrooms – perfect for middle of the night visits.  (Although this still didn’t prevent Amber from having an accident in our tent  the first day).

After setting up camp, we were hot so we put on our bathing suits and headed over to the pool and splash pad:

Ok – so this isn’t a complete roughing it camping trip.  Flamboro Valley Camping Resort has a pool, hot tub, splash pad, basketball court, playground, fishing pond, and lots of other amenities.  For me this is a perfect halfway point between canoe camping (which I used to do as a teenager at summer camp), and well, being at home.  There are even some camp sites with electricity if you can’t manage to go a weekend without it.

After swimming, we took the kids back to the site for some lunch, and to spend some quiet time playing card games: Crazy Eights, Golf and Skip-Bo:

All day Amber kept asking us when we would go camping.  In the days leading up to our trip she kept asking when she was going to CAMP.  She was confused between summer camp which her sisters had gone to all summer, and CAMPING. We explained that camping was sleeping in tents and roasting marshmallows over a fire.  We kept having to explain to her at the camp site that we were camping and that it wasn’t quite time for marshmallows and bed.

Finally the time came to make SMORES and roast marshmallows.  We used waffle cones and filled them with mini marshmallows and pieces of chocolate to make smores:

Then we wrapped the cones in tin foil and threw them on the grill over the fire pit:

Then finally we gave one to Amber:

Which caused her to happily exclaim;

The parents all stayed up pretty late talking around the fire.  I enjoyed some Molson Canadian Apple Cider that I had been sent as a Klout perk and really really liked it!

The kids slept well in the tent, even Amber.  I was a little worried because it was her first time CAMPING.  The next morning the girls and I ate a quick breakfast of bananas and cereal, then drove back into town for Amber’s soccer game:

After soccer we went back to the camp ground for lunch.  After lunch we took the kids to the Charity classic car show that raises money for Mac Kids the third weekend of every July:

The kids then went and did some fishing in the pond:

And Amber played at the park with Lily:

Late in the afternoon the rain started and it pretty much didn’t stop until the next morning but we didn’t let it stop us from enjoying our trip.  We made a really nice dinner over the fire:

Pork loin, baked potato, foil packet veggies and grilled corn on the cob.  Yum yum!

After dinner we went for a hike around the camp ground (in the rain), and then the kids played games in the tents, and head’s up with us under the covers we put over the picnic tables until bed time.  The parents then stayed up pretty late playing game after game of Euchre.

Sadly the next morning it was time to go home.  We packed up the site, then went for one last splash in the splash pad:

And I went for a nice relaxing soak in the hot tub:

Camping is probably not the most relaxing vacation, but it sure is fun!  You never know what memories you will make or what will happen.  Between the rain, me losing my van keys, cracking my forehead on the van door, Ethan hooking his finger in a fishing hook and Amber constantly asking us when we would go camping, it was quite the adventure that we’ll never forget! We LOVE camping!

Bye-bye Flamboro Valley Camping Resort, I can’t wait to see you again next year!

It sounds and looks like you had a lot of fun… unfortunately camping is not one of the things that Valentina and I will do together… since it is not a favorite of me… but I do let her enjoy that with others 🙂
