The Pros and Cons of Working Out With Others

Wow guys!  Am I seriously the only one who only has one pair of workout shoes?  I am so jealous of your shoe collections!  I swear I need to look into getting myself either a shoe allowance or a shoe sponsor.  I loved seeing all of the pictures of your shoes in your posts yesterday.

Today our writing topic for the September Blogging Challenge is:

Do you workout with others or by yourself? Why?

I run by myself.  I used to run with a running clinic held at the Running Room when I first started running, then I ran with a local running club, however I found when I had my first daughter that I couldn’t always run when they ran, nor did I have the time to participate in the social events they held.  Then I did my long runs with a friend in town but she’s since moved away (though she’s not that far, so I could always coordinate a run with her).

My LONG run training partner and motivator

Overall I’ve found that I like the freedom of running by myself. Especially for my short lunch hours where I just don’t have the time to wait for people to join me.  I also like not having to adjust my pace to match someone else.  Some days I like to run as fast as I can, and other days I’m recovering and like to run slow.

That all said, working out with others is not all bad:

In fact, three times a week I workout with a friend at work. On Mondays and Thursdays we go to spinning class together, and on Wednesdays we go to BodyPump class. Her camaraderie has really motivated me to fit in the cross-training that I need to prevent myself from getting injured. There are days when I don’t feel like going, but when she shows up at my desk ready to go I kinda feel guilty for making her walk over to the gym by herself, so I go. Then, during class, I feel the friendly competition between us, and with the rest of the class, which pushes me to lift more or pedal faster.

Do you workout with others or by yourself? Why?

PS – there’s still time to join in on the blogging challenge fun – Here’s what you do:

  1. Add a new post to your blog (here’s a list of suggested topics in case you get stuck)
  2. Share your post in my comments for that day.
  3. Read, comment & share others’ posts.
  4. Rinse, lather and repeat for each day of the month.

I love running by myself and I also go to group fitness classes alone. Going to the gym is my “me time”, but sometimes it’s fun to take a zumba class with a friend

I am usually by myself. Wouldn’t mind company but I am fine with it just being me too

Overall I like to run by myself, but I find on my long runs I really miss having you there to keep me going! Especially when I’m getting over 10k, it’s just so tempting to quit and call it good when I’m not running with someone. So I hope you’ll join me again for at least a few runs this fall/winter!

The other thing I’ve been thinking about is that my life doesn’t leave me a lot of time for a mid length midweek run, which I think I really need if I want to significantly improve my half marathon time. The problem is with the seasons changing it gets dark so early that I’m really not comfortable running solo in the evenings, and running at lunch restricts me to about 8k max. I’m hoping to find a person or two who might want to do 10-15k on, say, Thursday evenings. I wouldn’t mind running after dusk if I was with someone.
