Too Busy to Exercise? Here are 5 REAL Life Ways to Fit Fitness into Your Life

This is Day 2 of the March Healthy Living/Fitness Blogger Blogging Challenge. Please feel free to join in and share your blog post in the comments below. For a list of suggested topics, please visit this post.

Clean the kitchen, empty the dishwasher, fold the laundry, cook dinner, go grocery shopping, pack lunches, go to work, help the kids with their homework, pay the bills, vacuum, sweep, mop, dust… The list of things competing for our precious time seems endless.

How on earth are we expected to also find the time to exercise?

I get asked this question quite often – as a full-time working mom of three, training for a marathon, people are astonished that I find the time to train. The answer is simple:

I MAKE time and here’s how:

These are great REAL life ways to fit fitness into your life - I can't wait to try them! via fitnesscheerleader.com

1. I let the little things go.

I don’t know of many runners who have a clean house. There honestly isn’t enough time for me to do everything I’m ”supposed” to do, so I don’t.  I don’t sweat the small stuff, such as: I make my kids sort their basket of unfolded clean clothes and put them away.  This means their clothes often aren’t folded, or sometimes they sit in a laundry basket all week.  I don’t care because it frees up 2 hours of my weekend time to go for a run or another workout.  I do however, make sure the things that NEED to get done, get done, like washing and drying the clothes.  We all have clean clothes every Monday, though they may be a little wrinkled.

Mt. Laundry (my arch nemesis)

2. I schedule my workouts.

I plan out when, where and how I’m going to work out.  Every week I look at the family sports schedule (two of my daughters and my husband play hockey, the youngest is in gymnastics, and all the kids are taking swimming lessons).  I look for small windows of opportunity to fit workouts in and I use those windows. Some days that means I need to head out for a 6am run (even though I’m not a morning person), and on other days it means I sneak a quick workout in on my lunch hour.  If I have a short workout window, then I make the most of it and do an intense workout.

3. I workout WITH my kids.

On days when I don’t find the time to workout, I workout with the kids.  In the Spring, Summer and Fall they ride their bikes to the park while I jog beside them.  I then do a park workout while they play – sometimes they even workout with me instead of playing:

In the winter we go sledding – pulling them up the hill is a challenge!

4. I go to bed early.

Getting enough rest helps me to feel energized enough to workout the next day.  I may not always get up early to fit a workout in before work, but being rested helps me find the time later in my day to workout, like at lunch, or after work.  Getting enough rest also helps me with Monday’s topic: being happy.

5. I don’t make excuses.

I have a large variety of workout options available to me and the roads are always open.  I have stairs in my house, and tables for dips, step ups etc.  If I miss a workout it’s no one’s fault except my own because I didn’t make myself work out.  I look for opportunities to fit in a work out, not excuses to NOT work out.

It’s your turn now… How do you fit fitness into your life?

When I started with walking, I just decided that I would walk whenever I could, so it was me motivating me to just get up and go… the weather has slowed me down some but it hasn’t taken my desire away… I am preparing myself to be ready to go at a moments notice as soon as Spring is here…

Oh… I live out of a laundry basket, I don’t have time to sort and fold… lol, like you, the laundry is always washed regularly, it is just usually in a basket 🙂

You’re such an inspiration. I make excuses all the time, I’m much better at making excuses than following through on my workouts, and I literally have no real reason for the excuses (my office has a pretty efficient gym).

I have a question for you, though…How do you manage to get to bed early, work full-time, parent, workout and blog? I just can’t find enough time to do all of those things.

I write all of my posts ahead of time on the weekend, then schedule them to post through the week, and most of my workouts are on my lunch hour at work 🙂
