Happy Thursday! I’m joining in again with Amanda for Thinking Out Loud. Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about…. 

Goals, goals and more goals!

This month will be the first full month that I haven’t been training for a race in about 5 years.  Eeeek!  So I’ve been thinking a lot about how to maintain my current fitness levels and have decided to set some goals to help me.  So far in October I’ve run 100 km, so setting a goal to do that again in November seems pretty logical.  I run about 8k on Tuesdays and Thursday mornings with my running buddies, so if I run 10k (or a little more) every weekend then I should be able to hit the 100k goal (26km/week).

So goal #1 = Run 100 km this month

I also want to get stronger. In the past I’ve done my strength workouts on days that I didn’t run but found that on my running days my run would totally suck.  My legs would feel heavy and had zero power – it was like running through mud every.single. run.  This month I’m going to try going to the GoodLife Fitness beside my work on my lunch breaks on the same days that I run and will try a home strength workout on Sundays.

So goal #2 = Strength train 3 times a week

In all of this I also want to find some balance, to rest and recover more.  The “plan” I loosely outlined above has Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays off.  Instead of scheduling workouts on those days I’m going to do something entirely rare for me, I’m going to listen to my body.  If my body feels like doing some Yoga, then I’ll do some Yoga, but if it doesn’t then I’m going to rest 🙂

I want to stay active in this “off-season” so I hope that setting these goals will help!

    I always struggle with that same thing from strength training. I don’t like spending all day working out so doing it both in one day seems like a lot but I totally get that dead leg feeling if I run the day after. Such a struggle.

    It’s been a while since I’ve set some health goals- you’ve inspired me to do so for next month! Since the holidays are coming up it would be nice to go into the season with the right mindset 🙂 I love the “Listen to my body” goal, I think that’s super important when maintaining a healthy mindset!

    Strength training is high on my winter priority list too! I did good with getting on ONCE a week during this marathon training. But firsts things first: qualify for Boston Nov 7th!! Then, my first 50k two weeks after!!! Woohoo

    I have a crazy goal but I am going to work on it… I want to get an additional 375 miles by the end of the year, that is roughly 6 miles per day. With the good weather that has been pretty easy but with the Winter on it’s way it may not be possible, I will try my best anyhow 🙂 … Also I am going to pay a trainer for strength training help, it is the only way I can serious about it… we’ll see how it works out xox Good luck with your goals Janice xox

    Good luck with your goals next month, Janice! I’ve really been slacking on the strength training, so getting back into that is something I’d love to do.

    This November, I want to keep up with my running, but I want to focus on swimming and also start biking (stationary bike this winter anyway). I’ve got a lot of work to do before I can do a triathlon (Aug of 2016).

    Great goals! I’m trying to set my goals now. My joints are a mess because it’s already gotten cold and between that and some personal things I’m not at liberty to disclose on the internet as of yet… my ability to actually exercise has been nonexistent. Right now the only goal I have is: Do something every day. Whatever that means. Thankfully, I have you to inspire me! 🙂

    Good luck on all your goals! I think it’s great that you’re aiming for 100k this month even though you’re not training for a race. Keep that motivation up!

    Good luck on your goals! It’s a great idea doing 100k in a month. I find when I’m not training for a race my running seems to almost completely fizzle out until one day I’ll be stressed and I’ll ask myself “Hang on, what am I missing?”
