Taking a Look Back on 2014

Hi Everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday filled with family, fun and cheer.  Today I have a brief recap of my holiday festivities, a little year in review plus a linkup for you to SHARE YOUR year in review posts.

My Christmas was fantastic. This was the first Christmas without having a super young one at home that was over-tired and whiny but refusing to nap mid-afternoon.  Amber is well past the nap phase and it is incredible!  I was able to enjoy the day and spend it talking to the adults, and playing various games, like Sjoelen which is a dutch shuffleboard-like table top game.

We host Christmas for my family every year, so there’s no rush to go anywhere or to get dressed.  After the presents were opened the kids spent the day either playing with their new toys, or playing games with the adults.  It was really nice and dare I say it, it was almost relaxing.  The cutest part was Amber with her Elsa braid – Santa brought her a clip on braid that she wore ALL.DAY.LONG and refused to take off.  It wasn’t on her list but she loved it anyways.

I was suitably spoiled this year.  Every year I stuff a stocking for my hubby, and he’s supposed to stuff one for me, but he never does.  This year, with a lot of help from my bestie, I received the best stocking ever!  I was so surprised on Christmas morning.  I really didn’t want anything for Christmas this year except to spend time with my family and friends, so opening up a stocking full of great things that I didn’t put in there made me feel so special. Thanks guys!

As promised, this year I’m hosting “Three Favorites: a 2014 Year in Review” linkup for us to share the following three favourites:

  1. Three Favorite Posts
  2. Three Favorite Blogger Posts
  3. Three Favorite Moments of the Year

My Three Favorite Posts:

  1. The Joy and Pain of Running a Marathon (in Pictures) – This was my favourite post to put together this year because the photographers at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon were amazing and managed to capture all of my raw emotions during the race flawlessly.  I really wanted to share with you how I felt throughout the race because it was such an incredible journey, and I struggled to find the right words to express myself.  Thankfully the photographers did the work for me.

  2. Polar M400 GPS Watch with Activity Tracking Review – This GPS watch/activity tracking combo was a delight to review.  It’s an incredible training tool and I was very sad to have to send it back afterwards.

  3. 50 Questions You Didn’t Think to Ask Me – This was a fun meme post to type up – I find it very cathartic to stop and think about the things that are important to me as it made me more grateful for the things and experiences I’ve had in my life.

My Three Favorite Blogger Posts:

  1. Put the Phone Done – I just came across this post today as I was scrolling my twitter feed.  It’s a great reminder to be more present in the lives of people you love and cherish, and it’s going to be one of my 2015 goals.  I’m going to try to leave the phone in my purse a lot more often.

  2. Miss Zippy’s Year of Running 2014 – This was a really fun meme I came across on Amanda’s blog.  I enjoyed getting to know her better, the other running bloggers better and participating too.

  3. The Lucky Iron Fish Project -This wasn’t really a blog post, instead it was a Tedx Talk about the health risks of anaemia and a Canadian’s genius idea of how to resolve this global health problem in a sustainable and unique way.  The Lucky Iron Fish™ is a simple and effective health innovation that can give you 75% of your daily required iron intake. All you have to do is cook with it.

My Three Favorite Moments of the Year:

  1. Training for and running the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon with my bestie.  She supported me by running the second half of nearly every single long training run I had and even adapted to my wacky training times.  I really couldn’t have done it without her.

  2. My almost week-long vacation with my hubby.  It was the longest he and I have ever gone on vacation together in the 20 years we’ve known each other.  It was fantastic to find out that we really could spend that much time together and still get along.

  3. Taking my youngest daughter to her first day of kindergarten.  She was so very ready to be a “big girl” and watching her happily and confidently join her new class was an incredible feeling.

So glad your family had a lovely Christmas. Sometimes I wish we had 2 Christmas-es a year. 😀 Not for presents, but the joy and comfort it brings to everyone.
I just got to know about your blog recently, but my most favourite post is “Lessons in never giving up from my daughter”. It’s so inspirational how much motivation and resilience your little girl has.
My moment of 2014 is starting my blog. It’s a lot of work and I have so much more to learn. 😛
Happy New Year to you and your family, Janice!

Awwwww thanks Nancy! Sierra sure is persistent. She played in a hockey tournament this weekend and between her and the other goalie they let in 11 goals in the first game. By the third game she had a shutout – she didn’t let the previous loss bring her down. I love how sports are teaching her valuable life lessons at such a young age. I could stand to learn more from her.

Wow… that is truly impressive! Most of us would give up after 11 goals. Sierra is the oldest sibling too eh? She is a great role model for her sisters.

Thanks for the Link Up! I liked the post on “Put The Phone Down”. I am so guilty of checking my email and social media on my phone. I wily try harder to enjoy every little moment with my son since they really don’t stay little long. It’s a great reminde.

What a fun way to recap your year!!!
The first year we were married I explained how the stockings would work to my husband – he has gotten better each year:)

LOL – that’s what my husband says to do too – set the bar low at the beginning then very slowly raise it.

Put down the phone – yep! That is something I definitely need to work on in the new year! Being in Auckland right now, it helps, because there is not too much free wifi!

    Happy New Year!! 🙂

What a great Christmas you had, it’s all about quality family time. Love it! My best moment in 2014 was March 13, the day my daughter was born!
