My Year of Running 2014: Setting Big Goals and Going After Them

Every year, Miss Zippy hosts an annual Year of Running link up. I actually didn’t know anything about this link up until she contacted me to give her blog a makeover. While spending so much time on her site I realised just how awesome Amanda is and how cool her Year of Running link up is, that I’ve decided to play along.

If you want to play along too the rules are simple:
1. Grab her button
2. Answer the following questions
3. Add your link in at the bottom of her post.

Here’s my Year of Running 2014

Best race experience? This year, compared to last year when I did 18 billion races, I did far fewer races – I was really focused on my ONE BIG GOAL. I did however, manage to fit in a 5k, a fun run or dye race for my daughter’s 9th birthday,  a half marathon, a half marathon trail race, and a sprint triathlon. But by far the highlight of this year was completing my first full marathon since 2002! I still smile when I think of the joy I felt as I crossed the finish line.

Best run? Although it wasn’t my longest run, the run I did while on vacation in Saratoga Springs, New York was definitely the most fun. I greatly enjoyed running around the town searching for as many of the horse statues as I could find.

My run around Lake Placid on that same trip comes a very close second:
Best new piece of gear? Hands down it’s the Polar M4oo that I reviewed in October. It’s a heart rate monitor, it’s a GPS, it’s a sleep tracker AND it’s an activity tracker all wrapped up in one cute watch that I really really hope that Santa brings me for Christmas.

Best piece of running advice you received?  You can’t out-train a bad diet. During the second half of this year I really embraced eating real food and much less sugar. I feel so much better and my clothes are a lot looser too.

Most inspirational runner? I didn’t really have 1 runner that inspired me the most this year. Instead I found that the other working/running moms sharing their workouts and running on Twitter and Instagram inspired me, especially the ones that have great obstacles to overcome to fit in their training. Whenever I need some motivation, I simply scroll through my Twitter and Instagram feeds to find tweets and pictures of inspiration.

If you could sum up your year in a couple of words, what would they be? Goal-oriented. This year I trained for, and completed a bunch of race goals with very few “fun” races. Next year I’d like a healthier balance of fun and goals, though I do have 1 very BIG goal set for summer 2015….

Bonus Question – What’s on your running plan for 2015? Next year will be interesting to say the very least. I turn 40 in July and I’ve always wanted to do a Ironman 70.3 triathlon… So I registered for one that’s 4 days before my 40th birthday 🙂

Oh good idea, it doesn’t have to be running, it could also be fitness.

I ran past those horses in Saratoga Springs too! Did you happen to see the house that had 2 or 3 of them in their yard, absolutely COVERED in amazing flowers? It was unreal!

GREAT goal for 2015! Back when I did tris, that was my favorite distance. Your Lake Placid and Saratoga Springs runs sounds great. Both are such beautiful areas of the country. And I love that you did your first marathon after such a long break.

    Thanks for linking up!

Congratulations on all your races in 2014. I also love searching for things during my runs. It was fun doing the runchat scavenger hunt.
