Keep Holding On… What is Your Theme Song for 2014?

I see lots of posts around the internet about people choosing ONE WORD to define how they will live their lives in 2014 or to motivate themselves toward their goals. My friend Stephanie has chosen the word simplicity, and my friend Rachel has written about the word uncomfortable.

I haven’t chosen a word, nor do I intend to. (Though if I did perhaps the word BOSTON would be fitting?) Instead, I like to choose a theme song. Last year my song was “Inner Ninja” by Classified. When I run, I usually wear all black, making me feel like a ninja:

Yes, I am Ninja.
When the song Inner Ninja hit the charts last year, I knew I had found my song…all of the lyrics could be assigned meaning in relation to my training for the Ragnar Relay. (You can read about those meanings here).

This year, I am still a Ninja but I have a different focus: A full marathon. The last time I attempted to run this distance I fell apart. I don’t think I ever told you this, but I quit. I simply gave up 19 miles in and called my then fiancée (now my husband) to come get me. It was a cold, rainy miserable day at the end of October, the race was the Casino Niagara International Marathon and my hubby had proposed the night before under a tree along the Niagara Parkway with the illuminated falls as a beautiful backdrop. I just couldn’t find it in myself to walk/run the last 6.2 miles of the race (hubby finally picked me up at mile 20 after trying to convince me over my cell phone to keep going: “What?!? You’re quitting after running 19 miles? You ONLY have 7 left to go, you can do it! Why don’t you walk a mile and let me know at mile 20 if you can do it, I ‘ll meet you there.”). Now I could bore you with all of the details and excuses that led me to give up but that isn’t the point of this post but the real point is that despite the fact that I had successfully completed two full marathons before the Casino Niagara Marathon attempt, I ‘m absolutely petrified to attempt that distance again. Even though 10 years have gone by, the absolute pain and despair that I felt in quitting that day is as fresh in my mind like it happened yesterday and I need a song that will help push me to train, and to get through the race this fall.

Like last year, whenever I need a pick me up, or extra motivation to train for my goal, I will play my theme song.  This year my theme song will be “Keep Holding On” by Avril Lavigne because of the lyrics:

When it gets cold, and it feels like the end
There’s no place to go you know I won’t give in
(Ah, Ah) No I won’t give in (Ah, Ah-Ah)
Keep holding on

‘Cause you know we’ll make it through
We’ll make it through
Just stay strong
‘Cause you know I’m here for you
I’m here for you

When I quit that marathon 10 yrs ago I was FREEZING cold and soaked to the bone, but this year I ‘m going to keep on holding on when the running gets tough, and when it gets cold. I ‘m going to stay strong. I know I ‘m going to make it through.

I wish that this song was entirely my idea, but it was actually sparked from a post by my friend Brian of the blog Pavement Runner. Yesterday he shared his weekly Playlist Thursday post and at the end he included a link to an inspirational TV commercial called: Finish Line. (Unfortunately I cannot find the embed code for my post, so you’ll have to watch the commercial here: http://www.values.com/inspirational-stories-tv-spots/124-Finish-Line). The commercial is a runner fighting to finish a marathon. He’s battered and obviously injured (knees bleeding from stumbling and falling… hmmmmm does this remind you of someone’s recent Ragnar experience?). The visualization from the song and the lyrics are what have truly touched my heart and bring meaning to me.

This year, Avril Lavigne’s beautiful song “Keep Holding On”, and the inspiring message to remember that your dreams are worth the effort will help push me towards my goal. This year, my dreams are worth the effort, and I will keep holding on to make them happen. With you guys on my side I will fight and defend, I can do this!

Believe in yourself… Keep holding on!

Question: Do you have a theme song for 2014?

My word is light! When I walk or exercise I want to feel light and stretch out as much as possible. When I eat I am going to make the chose that will make me feel lighter. Lay off those heavy carbs and fish over red meat. I’m going to wear the brighter lighter colors. I am gong to stop looking at the ground and feel the light on my face and look at the light on other people’s faces and maybe even make eye contact and have an exchange of light.

I love it!! Honestly, every time Inner Ninja pops into my playlist I always think of you! 🙂

I like the idea of having a theme song for the year. That way it is more present in your mind (as songs stick to ya)… and you can have it play in your play list often. 🙂

I am rooting you on from Cali. Boston!! Woot! 🙂

I LOVE THE THEME SONG!! I am also picking different theme songs through the year, but I love the idea of picking just one for your goal! You will rock it!
