A Day in the Life of Fitness Cheerleader: 1 Year Later

Last year I shared what a typical day for me was like, only at that time I was a stay-at-home mom to a 5 yr old girl, a 3 yr old girl and a 6 month old baby. A LOT has changed since then ” I ‘m back to work, and that baby is now a very busy toddler, so I thought I’d share an updated glimpse into a typical day for me:

3:00 am ” the toddler wakes up screaming hysterically, and at some point her screaming manages to wake me up so that I stumble into her room to nurse her so that she’ll go back to sleep. (We tried the cry-it-out thing with her and after two weeks of 90 min crying sessions we realised that just caving in to her got us all way more sleep). I have no idea when she’ll stop nursing.

6:55 am ” my alarm attempts to wake me up, and I then go around the house waking up my precious daughters and husband, while leaving the toddler to get some more sleep.

7:15 am ” we all go downstairs and have breakfast together. Oatmeal for my oldest daughter, cereal for my middle daughter, a protein shake for me, and eggs for my hubby. (The daycare feeds the toddler breakfast).

Protein shake for Mommy - She made it herself!

7:30 am ” the big girls and I go upstairs to get dressed, then I wake up the toddler, nurse her, and get her dressed while my hubby makes ALL of our lunches with LOOOOOVVE (family joke: we tell the girls things are made with LOOOOVVE in order to get them to try it).

7:50 am ” I drive the toddler to daycare. If it’s a Monday or a Wednesday I also drive my middle daughter to daycare. My husband brings our oldest daughter to school everyday, and our middle daughter to Ã…”big school on Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays. (Keeping track of my middle daughter’s schedule makes my head spin).

8:20 am ” kids are safely at daycare and I begin my commute to work.

Not my actual commute, but it sure looks like it! (Image courtesy of Microsoft Images)

8:50 am ” Try to find parking at work (this is not as easy as it sounds)

9:00 am ” arrive at work. Check emails, communicate with vendors and clients, attend meetings etc. I usually grab a coffee from Tim Horton’s around 9:30.

12:00 pm ” lunch time. This is MY hour ” the one hour of the day JUST FOR ME! So I use it to work out:

MONDAY: Lunch spinning class with my co-worker.
TUESDAY: 8k easy run around the park.
WEDNESDAY: BodyPump class with my co-worker.
THURSDAY: 8k easy run around the park at lunch.
FRIDAY: Rest ” short lunch to make up any missing time from lunches that have gone a bit too long.

1:00 pm ” 5:00 pm ” back to the grind. I eat my lunch at my desk in small amounts throughout the day: sandwich, fruit, yogurt etc.

My typical lunch

5:00 pm ” time to find my van, and commute back to get the kiddos.

5:30 pm ” first pick up at the daycare to get the toddler and as mentioned above, my middle daughter.

5:50 pm ” second pick up ” my oldest daughter from her after-school care provider.

6:00 pm ” home! I nurse the toddler, then begin to cook dinner. I usually offer the kids some cut up veggies while I cook to keep them from bugging me.

6:30 pm ” 7:00pm dinner!

7:00 pm ” we either play outside for an hour, go to the park or for a swim in the backyard pool. On Mondays my middle daughter plays soccer, and on Wednesday my oldest daughter plays soccer.

7:30 pm ” hubby comes home.

8:00 pm ” everyone comes in and it’s bath time!

My little bathing beauty

8:30 pm ” cuddle up and read time. Hubby helps the big kids with their home reading while I nurse the toddler to sleep.

8:45 pm ” lights out for the kiddos

9:00 pm ” clean up the kitchen/dining room, fold laundry, review the big girl’s school agenda, prep for the next day, pack clothes for the next day’s work out etc. If I have the energy or the time, I blog/read blogs etc. On Mondays and Fridays I swim laps after the kids go to bed.

Swim time!

10:30 pm ” bed time for me!

Our mornings are very similar including the stumbling out of bed at 3am to calm one of my boys down. My boys are in school 5 days until 3pm when my husband or I pick them up. We both freelance so that means we work in the morning, break in the afternoon/early evening to spend with the boys and then I usually have to work again in the evening plus blog or read blogs. It’s exhausting but I appreciate having a flexible schedule.

Reading a schedule like that always makes me want to work harder. Completely puts things back into perspective on how fortunate I am to have some downtime to focus on my workouts/eating. One thing I noticed was that you usually workout with a co-worker depending on the day, which is HUGE. Being accountable to someone is one of the most important aspects in striving/reaching for your fitness goals. Keep it up!

It seems like our rolls are reversed this time. Now I’m at home with a baby and toddler and you’re at work. Kuddos to you on juggling it all and getting your workout/sanity time in. One thing I miss about working is that precious lunch hour workout!

You forgot to factor in the gang of girls running roughshod all over the street and using the trees as forts.

If your still nursing your toddler, are you still pumping? Or have you managed to ease off that? Just wondering as I am still nursing a 15 month old and looking to quit the pump. Thanks
